Chief, Division of Hand Surgery, Department of Orthopaedics

Position Highlights - The chief of the Division of Hand Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Division. The chief of Hand Surgery will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of the Division's academic, research, and clinical programs. This leader will have financial authority over the state-appropriated budget assigned to the Division, extramural research funding received, philanthropic funding, and other Division-related financial matters, in accordance with applicable University policies and practices. The chief will have discretion in the recruitment and retention of Division faculty who will have a direct reporting line to the chief of the Division of Hand Surgery. This position reports directly to the chair of the Department of Orthopaedics within the College of Medicine Phoenix for all academic activities. Consistent with the Academic Affiliation Agreement (AAA) between the University of Arizona and Banner Health, the chief will have a matrix reporting relationship to the CEO of Banner University Medical Group (BUMG) and the CEO of Banner University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP) for all clinical activities conducted at BUMCP. This role provides strategic, clinical, and academic leadership for the Division of Hand Surgery while maintaining a robust clinical practice focused on hand surgery, with a subspecialty interest encouraged. The division chief will foster excellence in patient care, education, research, faculty development, and ambulatory growth aligned with the missions of the University of Arizona and Banner Health.

Duties & Responsibilities - Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Division of Hand Surgery, ensuring alignment with departmental, college and Banner Health priorities. Lead divisional efforts in quality, safety, patient outcomes and clinical standardization, including out-patient based surgery and value-based care initiatives. Partner with departmental and BUMG leadership on ambulatory growth strategies, access, clinic efficiency and care model optimization. Support faculty recruitment, onboarding, mentoring and professional development within the Division. Oversee divisional performance metrics, including volume, quality outcomes, patient experience and financial stewardship. Collaborate with hospital and health system leaders on service line development, technology adoption and program expansion. Participate in departmental and institutional leadership committees as appropriate. Maintain an active adult hand and upper extremity surgery within Banner University Medical Group. Provide high-quality patient care in ambulatory clinic settings, surgical services and inpatient care at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix. Actively participate in multidisciplinary care teams, focusing on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), perioperative optimization and value-based care. Serve as a referral resource for complex hand and upper extremity cases within the Banner system. Teach and mentor medical students, residents and fellows in orthopedic surgery and related programs. Contribute to curriculum development and educational innovation within the Department of Orthopaedics. Support scholarly activity, including clinical research, outcomes research or educational scholarship, consistent with academic rank and interests. Promote a culture of inquiry, professionalism and continuous improvement. Conduct research and other scholarly work as applicable. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications - Hold an MD or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution. Must be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the associate professor level or higher. Must be board certified in speciality. Must be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona. Must be eligible for medical staff membership at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix.

Preferred Qualifications - Exhibit a track record of publishing research findings in the hand and upper extremity. Exhibit greater than 10 years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting. Demonstrate leadership experience supervising orthopeadic faculty and staff. Have outstanding interpersonal communication and professionalism skills.
