Job descriptionValid state teaching license with endorsement in Deaf and Hard of Hearing or Hearing Impaired education. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Deaf Education or a related field. Knowledge of hearing loss, audiology, amplification devices, and communication strategies. Proficiency in one or more communication modalities, such as American Sign Language (ASL) , Signed English , or oral communication . Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the unique needs of DHH learners. Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills. Certification in Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) . Experience working in school-based settings with diverse learners. Familiarity with IDEA , Section 504 , and relevant educational laws. Experience using and troubleshooting assistive listening devices and educational technology. Bilingual skills are a plus.
Job Summary :
The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TDHH) provides specialized instruction and support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and federal / state regulations. The TDHH collaborates with school staff, families, and other professionals to ensure access to curriculum, communication, and the general education environment.
Key Responsibilities :
- Provide direct instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing based on IEP goals.
- Adapt and modify curriculum materials for auditory access and language development .
- Support language acquisition , speechreading, and listening skills development, using oral, sign, or total communication as appropriate.
- Consult with general and special education teachers to support inclusive practices .
- Provide support and recommendations regarding classroom acoustics , assistive technology , and hearing devices (e.g., FM systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants).
- Monitor student progress and contribute to IEP development , progress reports , and data collection .
- Work collaboratively with audiologists , SLPs , interpreters , and other service providers .
- Provide family education and support to ensure carryover of communication strategies and hearing needs at home.
- Assist in training staff on effective communication strategies and technology use.
- Travel between school sites (if itinerant) to serve students across multiple settings.
