Work Location

Duke Regional Hospital 3643 N Roxboro St. Durham, NC 27704

General Description

As a vital leader at Duke Regional Hospital, a premier community-based hospital, you will implement and operationalize the Health System's strategic initiatives and Supply Chain programs. This role oversees supply chain services tailored to our community hospital setting, including the distribution of supplies, logistics, laundry and linen services, and inventory management.

Through collaboration and direct accountability with key customers and clinical staff, the Director will develop a hospital-wide approach for end-to-end supply chain integration. This approach aims to lower the total cost of distribution and inventory management functions while improving customer service and supporting our caregivers in delivering high-quality, community-focused patient care. Additionally, the Director will oversee the optimization and standardization of all supply chain automation tools and software within the hospital.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operational & Process Optimization
    • Workflow Evaluation: Evaluate and document the flow of material throughout the hospital, including all supply and inventory locations such as inpatient units, operating rooms, cath labs, and radiology.
    • Process Redesign: Identify variabilities and gaps in sourcing, logistics, distribution, and inventory management; recommend process redesigns for service improvement and cost reduction.
    • Cost Management: Quantify the hospital's total cost for materials distribution functions and develop sustainable targets for cost reduction through efficiencies and the elimination of redundant processes.
  • Leadership & Team Development
    • Team Management: Supervise, hire, and evaluate the performance of all hospital Supply Chain employees, fostering a supportive environment aligned with our community hospital values.
    • Mentorship: Develop a training and mentoring program for staff who support supply chain functions to build core expertise onsite at the entity level.
  • Performance & Metrics
    • KPI Tracking: Establish a set of performance metrics for entities and supply-intensive departments to measure productivity and customer satisfaction.
    • Inventory Efficiency: Ensure metrics drive an increase in unit-based inventory turns, elimination of duplicative and official inventories, minimization of inventory write-offs, and improved customer satisfaction.
    • Write-off Approval: Review and approve all inventory write-offs and adjustments.
  • Technology Integration
    • System Adoption: Drive the adoption of and leverage existing supply chain technology solutions to create optimal efficiencies.
    • System Linkage: Ensure appropriate information linkages to other systems (e.g., electronic health records) utilizing supply chain information/inventory systems and point-of-use technology.
  • Vendor & Stakeholder Relations
    • Supplier Management: Identify, develop, and manage effective relationships with existing and potential suppliers for distribution and laundry services to ensure they meet established cost, quality, and delivery targets.
    • Vendor Accountability: Implement and manage a system to evaluate, monitor, and report supplier scorecards for distribution and laundry service providers.
    • Strategic Partnerships: Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with clinical operations leadership, value analysis teams, corporate procurement, contracting, finance, and inventory management teams.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Healthcare, or a related field.
  • Preferred: Degree in Logistics.

Experience:

  • Seven (7) years of progressive experience in logistics, supply chain, or healthcare.
  • Specific Requirements within the 7 years:
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience specifically in supply chain/logistics.
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a management capacity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Healthcare Supply Chain Knowledge: Advanced understanding of clinical supply chain operations, including medical/surgical distribution, clinical inventory management, and regulatory compliance standards (e.g., Joint Commission, FDA guidelines).
  • Strategic & Analytical Skills: Proven ability to analyze complex data sets, establish key performance indicators (KPIs), and redesign clinical workflows to drive cost reduction and eliminate inventory redundancies without impacting patient care.
  • Technology Proficiency: Expertise in healthcare enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, inventory management software, and point-of-use automation, with the ability to bridge supply chain data with Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: High capacity to build trust and strategic partnerships with clinical operations leadership, nursing staff, and value analysis teams, ensuring supply chain initiatives are caregiver-centric.
  • Vendor & Contract Management: Exceptional negotiation and vendor management skills, capable of holding third-party providers (logistics, laundry, distribution) accountable to strict service level agreements (SLAs) and scorecard metrics in a hospital setting.
  • Change Management & Mentorship: Empathetic leadership style with a demonstrated ability to guide teams through operational changes, foster talent development, and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement within a community hospital environment.
