Job description

A family-owned catering company headquartered in Alexandria, VA is seeking a Director of HR. This role reports to the CEO and works heavily in conjunction with the Controller. After a hard hit 2020 catering and events have seen an uptick with annual revenue increasing back to pre-pandemic levels. All events are operated off-premise with the majority of them taking place in Washington DC and Northern Virginia. The pay for this role is $100k / year and is on-site.

Primary Function :

Develops human resources policies and program for the company. The major areas covered are organizational planning, organizational development, employment and recruiting, payroll, indoctrination and training, employee relations, compensation, benefits, safety and health, and employee services. Originates human resources practices and objectives that will provide a balanced program throughout all departments. Assists and advises management on human resources issues.

Duties :

  • Formulates and recommends human resources policies and objectives for the entire company
  • Determines and recommends employee relations practices necessary to establish positive employer-employee and employee-employee relationships.
  • Full life cycle processing of bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll through Paychex.
  • Identifies legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting human resources functions.
  • Acts as the primary contact with labor counsel and outside government agencies.
  • Protects interests of employees and the company in accordance with human resources policies and governmental laws and regulations.
  • Approves recommendations for terminations and disciplinary actions.
  • Directs a process of organizational planning that evaluates structure, job design, and manpower forecasting throughout the company.
  • Establishes wage and salary structure, pay policies, performance appraisal programs, employee benefit programs and services, and company safety and health programs.
  • Establishes standard recruiting practices and procedures to ensure a diverse workforce. Conducts recruitment effort for all exempt and non-exempt personnel; writes and places advertisements.
  • Designs and delivers training, safety, education, and development programs to the company.
  • Responsible for administration of and compliance with all AAP / EEOC policies and procedures. Works with third party consultant to produce annual AAP document.
  • Annually reviews and makes recommendations to executive management for improvement of the organization's policies, procedures and practices on personnel matters.
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures organization's compliance.
  • Maintains responsibility for organization compliance with federal, state and local legislation pertaining to all personnel matters.
  • Communicates changes in the organization's personnel policies and procedures and ensures that proper compliance is followed.
  • Coordinates or conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separations.
  • Consults with CEO on personnel or legal matters.
  • Works directly with department managers to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities on personnel matters.
  • Recommends, evaluates and participates in staff development for the organization.
  • Develops and maintains a human resource information system that meets the organization's personnel information needs.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience / Education :

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college or minimum 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional work experience, with a minimum of 3 years of experience in Human Resources function.
  • Demonstrated competence in various HR functional areas, such as recruiting, training, compensation, benefits, employee development and / or performance management.
  • Demonstrated experience in partnering with a diverse team of employees, managers and supervisors.
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
