DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :

This is the journey level class within the Information Technology Support Technician / Network Administrator series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are assigned to the Department of Information Technology; depending on assignment, positions in this class are also assigned to select District departments.

This class is distinguished from the Senior Information Technology Support Technician and Network Administrator classifications which perform the more difficult tasks and duties in the series, have broader scope and impact to the organization and may provide functional technical oversight of lower-level staff.

Responsibilities and Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Provide technical assistance to network and system users in the use of all equipment, hardware and software applications as it relates to college curriculum and business operations; troubleshoot hardware and peripherals, software and network operating problems including audio-visual / multi-media equipment.
  • Inform faculty and staff regarding policies and procedures related to use of equipment, applications and network resources.
  • Assist in the maintenance of security procedures for all computer systems, network resources and electronic data and files.
  • Deliver, install, troubleshoot, repair and / or support the operation of personal computers, audio-visual / multi-media equipment, peripheral equipment and networks as necessary for all assigned areas. Pick up and perform preventive maintenance on equipment as needed.
  • Provide technical analysis and feasibility on the use of all computer hardware and software in the District network; assist in the acquisition, distribution, installation and maintenance of software and other related network resources.
  • Operate and troubleshoot the video distribution and teleconferencing systems; set up conferences for recording or viewing purposes; record off-air programming and duplicate videos, ensuring adherence to copyright laws.
  • Coordinate the work assignments for student and short-term employees in an assigned computer lab.
  • Assist in the installation, configuration and optimizing of network resources; modify networks and software for specific configurations in the computer labs. Participate in evaluating new equipment for purchase, provide functional testing of equipment.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

When assigned to Publication Center :

  • Provide technical assistance to network and system users in the use of imaging equipment, including but not limited to print servers, imaging related cost accounting, web-based print submission, networked fax systems, networked pay-for-print systems, and variable imaging systems such as imaging kiosks, copiers, printers, and fax machines.
  • Provide hardware and software as it relates to District curriculum and business operations; troubleshoot imaging system problems.
  • Provide technical assistance for the scan to electronic documents system, including but not limited to, implementation, routing protocols, and managing user authentication.
  • Assist in the maintenance of security procedures for all networked imaging systems.
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair and / or support the operation of imaging devices and related systems as necessary.
  • Order, stock, distribute, and recycle consumable supplies for imaging devices.
  • Oversee the disposition of imaging devices and related systems, including but not limited to feasibility studies, technical research, quoting costs and features, assisting in the ordering process, receiving equipment, unpacking, set up, inventory, reassignment / relocation and surplus.
  • With assistance from the Information Technology department staff, maintain imaging-related servers including but not limited to network printing, electronic faxing, web-based print submission, pay-for-print, print tracking, scan to electronic document and production printing press control; and performs maintenance including, but is not limited to backups, system updates, user administration, configuration, monitoring, and application installation / updates.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • When assigned to District Police Department :

  • Schedule and perform preventative maintenance to electronic and mechanical parking permit machines, citation machines, CCTV and alarms located throughout the District.
  • Assist in the maintenance of computer security procedures for systems, network resources, and electronic data and files.
  • Perform basic services and repairs to parking permit dispensers, handheld parking citation machines, and download information from the citation processing vendor to the department.
  • Coordinate with Information Services regarding requests assigned from the Help Desk.
  • Follow District and departmental policies, procedures, practices and standards related to data services and technology.
  • Install and maintain District police computer systems in CCTV systems, alarms, patrol cars and parking permit machines.
  • Maintain supply and equipment inventories for CCTV, parking and alarm systems.
  • Serve as a liaison between outside contractors, vendors and District departments pertaining to gate controls, alarm systems, emergency telephones, intercoms, two-way radios and personal computers.
  • Advise Information Services and / or management regarding the replacement and repair of assigned computer equipment.
  • Maintain and repair football sign, fiber optic connections, camera maintenance and emergency telephone recording system.
  • Perform maintenance and provide support for UPS tracking equipment and scale for Shipping and Receiving.
  • Assist Network Administrator in hardware troubleshooting and repair of network equipment.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge of :

  • Methods and techniques of providing user support for computer operating systems.
  • Appropriate data processing techniques, networking, operating systems, peripheral equipment, multi-media equipment and software as used in the campus network.
  • Operational characteristics of various computer systems, audio-visual / multimedia equipment, operating environments and streaming technologies over the campus IP network.
  • Computer programming, operations and principal languages as necessary for specific job assignments.
  • Desktop computer software applications used on campus in curriculum or business operations.
  • Operational hazards and standard safety precautions.
  • Ability to :

  • Provide technical support services to all students, staff and faculty across the campus.
  • Learn new software applications quickly; and stay current with new trends and technologies.
  • Operate modern computers and office equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Learn to operate any computer or peripheral equipment as assigned.
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair and / or support personal computers, multi-media, audio-visual and associated peripheral equipment.
  • Provide instruction and assistance to network users in hardware and software applications.
  • Demonstrate the proper use and operation of assigned equipment.
  • Set priorities and follow up on work assignments.
  • Prepare clear and concise technical materials.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain the confidentiality and security of sensitive information and other District information.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responsiveness and cultural humility.
  • OTHER CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • All positions and assignments : possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license by the time of appointment.
  • District Police Department assignment : Background investigation clearance is required prior to appointment; the incumbent is required to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

    Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be :

    Education :

    Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science, business administration or a related field.

    Experience :

    Two years experience in the provision of computer support services for an agency, company, or organization.
