School : STRIVE Collegiate Academy Title : Instructional Coach FLSA Status : Exempt Reports To : Director of Academics Who Are We? STRIVE Collegiate Academy ( www.strivecollegiate.org ) is a tuition-free college preparatory charter school serving students of Nashville dedicated to closing the achievement gap between low-income students and their more advantaged peers. We were approved in August 2014 by the Metro Nashville Board of Education. We opened a middle school in July 2015, serving 120 fifth graders, with a goal of adding one grade level each year until grade eight. STRIVE serves students in the McGavock Cluster (Donelson, Hermitage, & Old Hickory) and are committed to going above and beyond to ensure students are successful in high school, college, and life. Position Overview : The Instructional Coach is a critical lever in improving student achievement. The role of the Instructional Coach is to support the school in overseeing curriculum and instruction for both staff and students, by building teacher understanding of cultural and instructional practices. This position will include collaborating with the Director of Academics and the Director of Culture to ensure high-quality instruction in classrooms through monitoring and evaluating classroom performance, curriculum, management of content assessments, and enhancing pedagogy development. The Instructional Coach will be responsible for modeling, co-planning, co-teaching and providing feedback to teachers, and must demonstrate and model a passion for urban education and leadership. STRIVE Collegiate Academy will consider potential candidates who : are dedicated to working with middle school students and believe that all student deserve a high-quality education, are vigilant and inventive planners and problem solvers, have a deep understanding of content and pedagogy development, can communicate effectively with different stakeholders (students, parents, teachers, board members, etc.), will use data to drive their day-to-day tasks, and will support the vision and mission of STRIVE Collegiate Academy. Responsibilities and Roles : Curriculum and Instruction Collaborate with the Director of Academics to review curriculum materials to incorporate cultural relevance and contemporary pedagogical strategies for all grades and all contents with clear, scaffolded outcomes aligned to the Tennessee Academic State standards Reinforce academic and curriculum initiatives that are led by the Director of Academics Assist teachers in the intellectual prep of designing lesson plans and adjust the pacing of lessons so that they are both engaging and aligned with academic goals and student needs Share instructional resources, strategies, and pedagogical techniques with teachers to enhance their instruction Assist teachers with materials and tools that are required to support classroom instruction, including technology Collaborate with the Special Education and English Language Learners’ programs to assess progress of diverse students Provide differentiated support on tailoring instruction to accommodate diverse learners and varying proficiency levels Regularly observe classrooms and assess instruction to provide feedback in alignment with curriculum standards and best practices for a teacher’s professional growth and students’ success Guide teachers in the development and use of rigorous content assessments including benchmark and interim assessments, and help analyze assessment data to inform instructional improvements that indicates levels of mastery Reinforce internal assessment structures and systems to monitor academic progress of students throughout the year Communicate regularly with the Director of Academics concerning student achievement, curriculum development, professional development, staff evaluations, and the budgetary needs for each Culture and Engagement Collaborate with the Director of Culture to integrate cultural competency into teaching methods, ensuring classroom practices honor diversity and inclusivity Reinforce school wide culture initiatives that are led by the Director of Culture to foster a positive, structured, and achievement oriented learning environment for both staff and students Advise teachers on techniques to enhance student participation and build positive relationships within the classroom Support teachers in implementing classroom behavior interventions for individual students and groups of students Reinforce the use of clear rewards and consequences in alignment with conduct expectations school wide Guide teachers in the analysis of student discipline data and provide necessary school wide culture support Serve as a resource for addressing cultural challenges and advising on practices that support a respectful and collaborative school culture Communicate regularly with the Director of Culture in support of school and student culture, discipline, character and social emotional development, school wide events, activities, and field lessons that celebrate cultural diversity and promote community engagement Professional Development Collaborate with the Director of Academics and the Director of Culture to ensure that the teachers’ professional needs are being addressed with the appropriate professional development in alignment to culturally-responsive teaching, instructional strategies, and effective classroom management Demonstrate effective teaching strategies through co-planning, co-teaching, and live classroom modeling to inspire and guide teachers on a weekly basis, and arrange cross curricular and grade level classroom observations Provide timely, specific, and actionable feedback to educators to support their continuous professional growth Support teachers on individualized coaching plans based on strengths and areas for improvement Participate in teacher meetings led by either the Director of Academics or the Director of Culture, following uniformed agendas aligned with measurable goals Facilitate professional learning communities for teachers to encourage collaborative sharing of best practices, both academically and culturally Qualifications and Skills : Bachelor's degree required Master’s degree preferred Valid teaching certification required Minimum of four years of educational experience with a proven record of enhancing student achievement Successful manager of an urban classroom who has used structure, incentives, and high expectations to drive student success Collaborative team player who cultivates a professional learning community and communicates effectively with colleagues Strong interpersonal skills for delivering and receiving constructive feedback that fosters growth among students and staff Commitment to a standards-based curriculum, leveraging student data and assessments to inform instructional practices Excellent written and verbal communication skills with meticulous attention to detail Highly organized, self-directed, and adaptable to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment Creative, resourceful, and reflective, with the ability to highlight strengths and address areas for improvement Culturally competent, capable of working collaboratively with staff, families, and community members Resilient and Physical Demands and Work Environment : The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical Demands : This role involves extended periods of standing, sitting, squatting, and kneeling. The employee must be able to safely lift items weighing up to 25 pounds and perform tasks that require repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements. Normal or corrected vision and hearing are essential. Overall, the physical exertion is minimal, with only occasional overnight travel required for academic field lessons.
