About the Role :

We are hiring for a motivated Editor to take over the Media, Journalism and Communication list.

You will be responsible for acquiring and publishing a high-quality program of research monographs, edited collections, Handbooks, Palgrave Pivots, upper-level textbooks, major reference works, and open access titles and partnerships. You will drive the growth of the list and develop the Media, Journalism and Communication portfolio as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio of the Publishing Unit, while overseeing and managing the editorial processes and implementing strategies to deliver upon departmental objectives. This role will report into the Executive Editor for Film, Cultural and Media Studies and be expected to commission 60-80 titles per year.

You will be target-driven, energetic, and open to working in an ever-changing environment. You will be a creative self-starter who has a deep understanding of academic publishing, with an entrepreneurial spirit and exceptional communication and presentation skills.

Role Responsibilities :

Manages and grows a publishing program and delivers competitive and profitable products in line with the company's publishing strategy.

Performs key publishing acquisition activities, including :

Soliciting, reading and evaluating proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, market and suitability for the list

Researching market trends to identify new authors, new titles and new products

Managing the backlist associated with the assigned areas, maintaining profitable relationships with existing authors, book series editors and editorial board members

Supporting authors and editors in developing their book projects, including OA works and partnerships

Negotiating publishing contract terms

Remaining a point of contact for authors / editors throughout publication process

Ensures editorial policies and processes are consistently applied across activities and goals set by editorial management are met

Develops and maintains a large network of authors / editors through various engagement activities within the research community

Continually promotes and builds the brand through virtual interactions as well as travelling widely to academic conferences and campus visits

Maintains continuous cooperation and dialogue with editorial service, marketing, production and other relevant departments concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest

Supports the training and / or mentoring of new and junior team members

Experience, Skills & Qualifications :

Essential

Educated to degree level or equivalent (preferably in a relevant field of study)

Academic publishing experience

Excellent networking, negotiation and acquisition skills

Excellent communication and presentation skills

Willing and able to travel

Numerate, analytical and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail

Able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative

Resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries

Excellent team-working and relationship building skills

Able to work independently within a (virtual) team environment

Target driven and motivated to meet core objectives and KPIs

Strong entrepreneurial spirit, commercially minded and embraces change.
