Responsibilities
Job Summary / Purpose
Accessions specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), assists Medical Technologists or Medical Laboratory Technicians by processing specimens, assisting with inventory management, proficient at phlebotomy and related duties, and cross-trained in all areas as determined by location.
Registers patients in LIS as determined by location or facility. Performs Point of Care (POC) Testing and resulting of POC tests.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
Customer Service / Patient Care / Human Resources. Evaluates and prioritizes workload for efficient delivery of services. Keeps the laboratory Technical Specialist, Team Leader and / or Lead Shift Technologist informed of activities, including unusual patient data or results. Provides clinical orientation and supervision for students and new or less experienced laboratory personnel as assigned. Uses problem solving skills and persistence to obtain an acceptable outcome.
Communication. Establishes and maintains a working relationship with the immediate supervisor for the position or shift worked to promote efficient and effective communication. Establishes and maintains lines of communication with all staff. Promotes public relations by maintaining a professional image and conduct in interactions with other health care professionals, agencies and the community. Practices effective telephone skills. Uses paging system correctly and effectively. Participates in department meetings.
Technical Skills and Knowledge. Follows prescribed procedures, operates instruments and performs testing in assigned areas of the laboratory to complete requested work according to lab standards. Demonstrates age specific knowledge for tests performed. Collects lab specimens from patients as required using prescribed patient identification and collection procedures. Establishes and maintains chain of custody for legal purposes. Proficiently uses the laboratory inventory system (scanner and software) to order supplies. Puts up supplies and maintains the supply room in a neat and orderly fashion. Uses laboratory information system (LIS) appropriately and efficiently. Ability to perform duties across multiple departments within the laboratory.
Quality Assurance, Improvement and Control. Conducts established quality control procedures to ensure the highest quality throughout the lab functions. Evaluates results of quality control, implements corrective action when indicated and documents actions. Anticipates and recognizes errors. Evaluates suitability of specimens for analysis. Participates incompliance with all regulatory agencies (. CAP, JCAHO, CLIA and OSHA).
Personal and Professional Growth and Image. Attends educational training and meetings to expand personal knowledge related to position requirements. Complies with dress code policy.
Attendance and Dependability. Fewer than 5 occasions in a rolling 12-month period. Punctual as defined by department policy to ensure that work is started and finishes on time. Follows department rules regarding scheduling and schedule changes. Demonstrates willingness to adjust schedule to meet departmental needs.
Maintenance and Safety. Maintains clinical laboratory equipment according to policy to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Maintains assigned areas in a clean and orderly manner. Puts up supplies and stocks as needed. Follows policy for the Employee Injury, Infection Control, Hazard Surveillance and Chemical Hygiene Programs. Participates in and recommends changes to the LIS and Downtime Test management system.
Financial Resources. Assists in cost control through efficient use of supplies to maximize allocated resources. Practices inventory control and orders supplies as needed.
Compliance / Policy Development. Reads and follows all organizational and departmental policies and procedures to remain in good standing with the organization and lead by example.
Discipline : No disciplinary issues (counselings) within last 12 months.
Performance : Performance Evaluation score of Meets Expectations or greater
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
Education : High School Diploma or GED
Experience : 12 months continuous laboratory experience
