Phlebotomist
Durham, NC
Summary
Provides "painless" phlebotomy procedures utilizing universal precautions and safe work practices. Processes specimens and demonstrates proper handling of samples. Instructs patients on Coumadin and performs limited waived testing (Protimes). Maintains sample integrity by positive identification and labeling (2 identifiers). Maintains work area, supplies and cleanliness. Excellent bedside manner with patients. Provides comfort and instructions to patients. All other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Performs painless venipuncture and capillary puncture for the Coumadin clinic
- Identifies patient following protocol
- Prepares samples for processing w / correct label and bar code and inspects vials
- Reconciles outstanding sample report at day's end.
- Observes safety procedures and sample prep
- Reviews systems to ensure that all tests ordered by the provider have been accounted for and collected

Education and / or Experience
One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Athena Database software; Microsoft Spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word Processing software.
