Classification Description Summary

Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine maintenance and repair functions on City-owned automotive vehicles and equipment; responds to requests from customers and prepares appropriate work orders; and provides assistance to higher level equipment mechanic staff in the performance of assigned functions.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and / or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Perform a variety of routine maintenance and repair functions on City-owned automotive vehicles and equipment including regularly scheduled preventive maintenance and vehicle servicing.

Maintain appropriate fluid levels in vehicles; drain and change motor oil, replace coolants, oil, and air filters and flush radiators.

Conduct vehicle safety inspections; inspect and replace brakes, pads, and shoes; replace defective chassis parts including shock absorbers, universal joints, and wheel bearings.

Replace or adjust water and fuel pumps, starter, thermostat, and spark plugs.

Repair horns and heaters; install vehicle accessories including windshield wiper blades, fan belts, batteries, and headlights.

Inspect and maintain motor sweepers; clean, maintain, or change sweeper brooms; adjust the sweeper elevator belt.

Respond to calls for service, maintenance, or repair needs from customers as necessary; prepare appropriate work orders.

Maintain accurate and detailed records and files; prepare reports as requested.

Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of the shop and surrounding work area; dispose of waste, oils, and chemicals according to established safety procedures and guidelines.

Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and / or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of :

Basic operations, services, and activities of an equipment maintenance and repair program.

Methods, techniques, materials, and tools used in the routine and preventive maintenance of various light and heavy vehicles and equipment.

Principles and practices of vehicle safety inspections.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Principles and procedures of record keeping.

Ability to :

Perform a variety of maintenance and repair functions on City-owned automotive vehicles and equipment.

Conduct vehicle safety inspections and repair or replace appropriate parts.

Safely utilize a variety of hand and power tools in the performance of assigned functions.

Respond to calls for service from customers and prepare appropriate work orders.

Maintain accurate and detailed records, parts inventory and service files.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Learn and apply new information and skills.

Work in a team based environment to achieve common goals.

Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.

Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :

Education / Training :

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience :

One year of experience in vehicle maintenance, servicing and repair.

License or Certificate :

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within the probationary period (six months).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment : Shop environment; frequently works near moving mechanical parts; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and / or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.

Physical : Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and / or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
