Job Description
The City of Raleigh is seeking a Landscaping Maintenance Worker to join our Transportation Department. In this role, you will be able to share your experience and knowledge in landscape maintenance. You will demonstrate your understanding of standard practices, methods, and materials relevant to your assigned work. Your expertise will extend to identifying occupational hazards and applying relevant safety principles and practices. You will demonstrate proficiency in discerning the uses and properties of supplies and equipment crucial to the tasks at hand.
Additionally, you will have a thorough understanding of applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations governing your work environment. Your commitment to precision and high standards will add to your value as you maintain established quality and safety standards and meet established performance standards. Your attention to detail in assignments will be a key attribute as you work toward the successful completion of tasks. You will showcase your comprehension and application of information learned, underscoring your dedication to continuous learning. Your skillset will include the competent operation of assigned tools and equipment, reflecting your readiness to contribute effectively to our team's success.
Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt, medians, and storm drains. As a member of our 218 person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps; and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets.
Within the Landscape Maintenance Unit you will be part of a team responsible for maintaining medians and rights-of-way throughout the City by trimming trees, bushes, and grass, and planting various trees and plants each season.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Operating various types of small equipment and hand tools
- Performing unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance
- Performing landscaping maintenance
- Selecting proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks
- Performing work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
- Operating walk behind leaf machine for leaf collection
- Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during leaf collection, emergencies, and inclement weather
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience :
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions :
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
