About the Job

The Law Practice and Technology Librarian reports to the Reference Administration & Web Services Librarian. Professional librarians are hired under the University of Minnesota Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) employee classification system which may lead to promotion and continuous appointment based on successful fulfillment of library duties, published scholarship, and professional participation.

Responsibilities

The Law Practice and Technology Librarian plays a primary role in the integration of Law Library services and instructional programs into Law School initiatives focused on preparing students for evolving legal practice environments, particularly with regard to legal practice technologies. Primary responsibilities include developing and implementing instructional programs on the use of existing and emerging legal technologies, and the impact these technologies have on the practice of law. This position will be responsible for all aspects of teaching the upper-division two-credit Law Practice and Technology course. The position also will provide subject-specific law practice and technology presentations in clinical and doctrinal courses. Additional instructional responsibilities may include developing and teaching one-unit courses related to the use of technology in specific law practice areas, and participating in first-year legal research instruction. Additional responsibilities include participation in other Law Library initiatives and programs, including the design and management of library spaces devoted to law practice technologies.

The Law Practice and Technology Librarian is a member of the Law Library's reference team, providing general reference and research assistance to all Library patrons and participating in a rotating reference schedule that includes evenings and some Saturdays. Reference duties include : conducting in-depth research and developing specialized research expertise as needed in support of the scholarship and teaching of the Law School faculty; facilitating research conducted by students including their work on journals, moot courts, clinics, and in seminar courses; preparing and updating Library research guides; and other responsibilities as assigned.

The Law Practice and Technology Librarian represents the Law Library at the campus, regional, and national levels; engages in research and scholarship relevant to law librarianship, legal education, or substantive legal subjects; and participates in professional service activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • J.D. from an A.B.A. accredited law school
  • M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited graduate school
  • Minimum of two years of professional reference experience in a law library
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a law practice environment
  • Evidence of in-depth knowledge of current and emerging law practice technologies, and their integration into a wide range of practice environments
  • Evidence of strong teaching and presentation skills
  • Evidence of exceptional research competency, including ability to analyze research requests effectively, conduct expert legal and interdisciplinary research, synthesize research results, and deliver a high quality, comprehensive final product
  • Evidence of strong written, oral, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong service philosophy
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, and to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute actively to the law library profession through both scholarly productivity and participation in professional activities
