Position Overview
The Associate Law Librarian teaches law school courses; participates in the management of law library operations and personnel; provides leadership, coordination, and supervision of access services; provides instruction and specialized research services and resources to law students, law faculty, the Marquette community, the legal community, and members of the public through service at the reference desk and in support of law school classes and other programs; participates in the faculty liaison program; and collaborates in the evaluation, selection, and instruction of information resources. May serve on law library, law school, and university committees. The Associate Law Librarian reports to the Director of the Law Library. Direct reports include part-time law library circulation assistants, with secondary supervision of full-time law library staff who provide services at the circulation desk. Adjunct rank commensurate with experience. Duties and Responsibilities In coordination with the Director of the Law Library and another Associate Law Librarian, participates in the management of law library operations and personnel, including assessment of the legal research curriculum and law library services and resources.
Collaborate in the development, evaluation, and implementation of law library goals, objectives, policies, procedures, services, and publications as needed or assigned, and perform other related duties.
Provide leadership and coordination of law library access services, including overseeing law library circulation policies and procedures and the daily operations of the circulation desk and related resources. Supervise circulation desk personnel.
Teach in the fall and spring semesters, including designing, developing, teaching, and assessing advanced legal research courses. In rotation with other law librarians, teach advanced legal research during the summer session. Support other areas of the curriculum through legal research instruction and outreach, including in collaboration with legal writing faculty in the first year Legal Analysis, Writing, and Research curriculum.
Participate in the weekly reference schedule, including the potential for occasional evening and weekend hours.
Participate in the library liaison program, offering research and research support to faculty and research assistants.
Collaborate on collection development and related policies.
Develop and update research guides, bibliographies, or other instructional materials and resources.
May serve on law library, law school, and university committees.
Participate in the life of the Law School and in professional development activities. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, and an M.L.I.S. (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited library school.
At least three years of experience teaching legal research in an academic setting, including demonstrated knowledge of online legal research systems, web-based legal resources, and print legal research materials.
At least five years of experience as a law librarian or practicing attorney, including at least three years of professional experience working in an academic law library.
Flexibility and the ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team, prioritizing projects and tasks.
Strong service orientation and ability to work with a diverse patron population.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Experience working in a legal practice setting.
Experience with library circulation duties and integrated library management systems.
