Reports to Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Job Description Summary / objective The Division of Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans, a public, historically black university, is committed to empowering and promoting the upward mobility of diverse populations of traditional and nontraditional students through quality academic programs, teaching, research, and service to achieve excellence in higher education using various teaching and learning modalities. Students and faculty are encouraged to help create a thriving academic environment at SUNO. As such, the program faculty is expected to be committed to the standards of teaching excellence. The Dean of the Leonard S. Washington Memorial Library is generally responsible for all aspects of the library's operation. This includes managing the collection, hiring and supervising professional and non-professional staff, maintaining and updating library technology, developing and implementing the library budget, and ensuring that students' and faculty's research and other library-related needs are met. The Dean will ensure that the library adheres to the legal requirements and University policies and procedures. The Dean will have teaching responsibilities and serve on faculty committees as appropriate. The Dean will collaborate with senior leaders, faculty, staff, and students to advance the University's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and engagement and make the library a welcoming and inclusive environment. This position is partly funded by the Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) federal grant. As such, the Dean of the University Library is responsible for implementing the objectives established in the Title III Program for this federally-funded activity. Work with the Vice Chancellor to continue to develop the program's infrastructure to include : Prioritize student engagement through partnerships and creative new initiatives; Demonstrate leadership in fostering inclusive and equitable policies and practices; Support the intersection of technology and learning in collaboration with campus partners; Supervise professional librarians and library staff, including supporting their development and the work they do as supervisors and mentors of student workers; Manage the operations of the library, including the budget; Direct all domains of library operations and Grant writing to establish and maintain a steady stream of funding sources to enhance the program. Part-time teaching (6 - 9 semester credits) of undergraduate courses may include evening, weekend and / or online courses. The candidate should have teaching experience at the college level. Teaches assigned courses and associated labs; informs students in writing of instructional standards; posts and maintains office hours; participates in assessing student learning outcomes. May work with faculty on new courses, curriculum, instructional materials, and evaluation tools; assist with preparing course proposals, curriculum updates and the construction of degree / certificate programs. Participates in the recruitment of prospective students. This includes but is not limited to, working with partner institutions in the development and maintenance of a sustainable recruiting model. Other responsibilities include serving on college committees, advising students, supervising undergraduate student research projects, and performing other duties as assigned. Supervises and supports areas under the library per view, such as Southern University at New Orleans Museum of Art (SUNOMA) and the Center for African American Studies (CAAS). A proven record of success in the operation of academic libraries. A demonstrated understanding of technological systems for libraries, Open Education Resources, and archival collections management systems. Preferred education and experience An additional graduate degree in an academic discipline is preferred. A doctoral degree is preferred.
