The City of Rancho Cucamonga seeks a highly innovative, strategic, and forward-thinking individual to join our Executive Management Team as the Library Director. Under administrative direction, plans, coordinates, and carries out the activities of the public library and forthcoming interactive discovery space; assists and cooperates with the Library Board; serves as a member of the City management team; performs related duties as required. This leader will participate as an integral champion of Team RC - the Citys organizational development initiative emphasizing personal and professional growth.
About Rancho Cucamonga
The City is home to over 175,000 residents, situated at the San Gabriel Mountains base, covering 47 square miles. Located 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and 70 miles west of Palm Springs, it offers scenic vistas and access to outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, and skiing. The city boasts numerous recreational amenities, parks, trails, and cultural venues, making it a desirable place to live, work, and play.
Community and Education
Rancho Cucamonga is ranked as one of Californias safest cities, with a highly educated community supported by local educational institutions, including a community college, a university satellite campus, and multiple K-12 schools. City Government and Services
Incorporated in 1977, the city operates under a Council / Manager government with elected officials including the Mayor and City Council. The city employs approximately 527 staff across various departments, with a total budget exceeding $352 million, including about $11 million allocated to the Library Fund.
Library Department
The Rancho Cucamonga Public Library, awarded the National Medal in 2013, has two full-service facilities and employs around 67 staff members. The department is focused on providing access to innovative resources, supporting education, and fostering a love of reading. Major initiatives include the upcoming $12M replacement of the Archibald Library and the opening of the new interactive discovery space at the Paul A. Biane Library.
Position Overview
The Library Director will be a strategic leader, overseeing library operations, staff management, community engagement, and capital projects. Responsibilities include policy formulation, budgeting, staff supervision, community relations, and collaboration with the Library Board and city officials. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, communication skills, and a passion for public service and library innovation.
Qualifications
- Masters degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Minimum of eight years of professional library experience, including three years in a management role with supervisory responsibilities.
- Knowledge of modern librarianship principles, public library administration, and community engagement.
- Ability to develop community support, manage budgets, and lead capital projects.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California drivers license.
