Job description

The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center, and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. The Anderson Academic Commons is the campus centerpiece for collaborative teaching, learning, and engagement. The University of Denver Libraries are central to discovery and creative interaction among students and faculty, and provide collections, services, personnel, and systems that support the teaching and research programs of the University. Position Summary

Reporting to the Interlibrary Loan Supervisor, this position is responsible for the processing of Interlibrary Loan Lending and works scheduled shifts on call at the Lending Desk assisting and coaching student employees with circulation and other library patron needs. This position assists with other Interlibrary Loan unit workflows as needed. This position is responsible for opening the library on several weekdays. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 6 : 30 AM to 2 : 30 PM. All staff participate in a team-based organization : this position is a member of the Interlibrary Loan unit within the Access Services department.

Essential Functions

ILL Lending Specialist (50%)

  • Responsible for Interlibrary Loan lending including identifying and locating materials to be loaned to libraries in good standing, as well as processing article deliveries.
  • Works with the Hampden Center, Stacks unit, and other Interlibrary Loan staff to ensure all lending and scanning requests are completed in a timely manner.
  • Monitors outstanding shipped materials to ensure timely delivery of loaned materials. Reviews lending requests to ensure materials are properly checked in and out in ILLiad and Alma.
  • Corresponds with borrowing libraries regarding requests, lost materials, billing, and anything else as needed.
  • Supports and assists student employees workflow in ILL Lending.
  • Communicates Interlibrary Loan policies to lending libraries and DU patrons.
  • Keeps track of Lending invoices, including the preparation of accounts payable deposits.
  • Facilitates electronic article delivery from electronic and physical resources including scanning, processing, and directing requests to other library departments.
  • Facilitates e-book lending via Occams Reader.

Back Up Interlibrary Loan Unit (25%)

  • Supports Interlibrary Loan Borrowing and Prospector procedures.
  • Shares responsibility with other Interlibrary Loan staff for monitoring and processing Document Delivery requests in a timely manner.
  • Works closely with other Interlibrary Loan and Access Services staff to report systems and database problems as appropriate.
  • ILL Lending Statistics (5%)

  • Manages and tracks monthly Interlibrary Loan lending statistics.
  • Lending Desk On-Call (20%)

  • Works Monday through Friday, 6 : 30 AM to 2 : 30 PM, and works a flexible schedule as needed. Responsible for opening the library on several weekdays, some of which will be solo.
  • Works on-call at the Lending Desk assisting and coaching student employees on Lending Desk activities utilizing the Alma ILS to circulate library material, collect and negotiate fines utilizing the credit card machine, answer user questions utilizing the University Libraries website and electronic resources, and refer patrons to the appropriate department within the library or DU campus as needed. Handles patron questions and concerns, communicates and handles service problems politely and efficiently, follows procedure to solve patron problems, maintains pleasant and professional image.
  • Other Functions :

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Assist with cross training within Access Services department.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff, patrons, and staff members from other institutions.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and to perform work requiring considerable attention to detail.
  • Ability to collect and analyze statistics and maintain clerical records.
  • Ability to use and troubleshoot issues with automated library systems, computers, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize and work under pressure.
  • Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience performing detailed work in an automated system
  • Experience in public service or customer service-forward role
  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday, 6 : 30 AM to 2 : 30 PM
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a library
  • Experience working with ILLiad (or comparable RSM software)
  • Experience working with Ex Libris Alma (or a comparable ILS)
  • Working Environment

  • Indoor work environment
  • Split between a desk in an open-office environment, a busy service desk, and some movement around the library
  • Workload varies alongside the academic calendar and user needs
  • Noise level ranges from quiet to conversational speaking
  • This position necessitates substantial in-person engagement during the majority of working hours. The University of Denver and University Libraries offer a progressive flexible work policy that permits approximately one day of remote work per week, which can be negotiated between the employee and their supervisor.
  • The unit is one of several working collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization
  • Physical Activities

  • The person in this position alternates between staying in a stationary position for extended periods and needing to move around the office.
  • They traditionally perform shelving activities-which require stooping, bending, kneeling, traversing stairs or stepstools, and lifting up to 35 pounds-pushing a loaded library cart, and moving packages and boxes.
  • Work Schedule

    Monday through Friday, 6 : 30 AM to 2 : 30 PM

    Hourly Range :

    The hourly range for the position is $19.42 - $21.46.
