Job Summary
Under the direction of a licensed registered nurse, provides practical nursing services to students with medically complex health needs. Performs designated routine non-invasive and invasive procedures established by physician orders. Provides basic first aid and attends to students health needs as indicated in the School Health Services Manual.
Essential Functions
1. Performs routine and prescribed invasive and non-invasive procedures, including, but not limited to; gastric tube feedings; breathing treatments; diabetic glucose monitoring; urinary catheterizations; and tracheostomy care and suctioning.
2. Identifies and monitors student health status through needs assessments, screening procedures, examinations, observations, and analyses.
3. Provides basic first aid and attends to student health needs as indicated in the School Health Services Manual
4. Establishes and maintains appropriate medical records, logs, indices, and schedules on daily and school year diagnoses, procedures, treatments, monitoring, adverse reactions, and notifications.
5. Distributes / administers prescription and non-prescription medication to students in accordance with applicable laws and directives, following guidelines described in school health policy manual.
6. Assists the student, school personnel, and parents in understanding and coping with a students disability or condition.
7. Designs intervention in conjunction with other health and education team members to prevent further disability.
8. Facilitate Telehealth appointments for students.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Probation : Six (6) months
Qualifications
Open Requirements : Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by the Florida State Board of Nursing; OR graduation from a School of Practical Nursing meeting the minimum requirements of the Florida State Board of Nursing with authorization from the Florida State Board of Nursing to practice as a LPN in accordance with Florida Statutes. Must maintain same during employment in this class.
Promotional Requirements : NA
Licensing : Must secure licensure as a LPN by the Florida State Board of Nursing prior to appointment and must maintain same during employment in this class. CPR certification must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained during employment in this class.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of principles and techniques of practical nursing
- Working knowledge of clinic procedures, instruments, equipment, and the uses and effects of medications
- Knowledge of the principles of practical nursing in providing nursing services
- Knowledge of childhood illnesses
- Knowledge of First Aid and CPR
- Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications
- Skill in the use of glucometer, nebulizer, catheters, IVAC feeding machines and equipment, suction machine, and related medical equipment
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Basic word processing, spreadsheet, and database software skills
- Ability to administer medications and treatments adjusting to the students condition
- Ability to initiate appropriate emergency measures
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students, parents, and other staff members
- Ability to maintain applicable records and reports
- Ability to inventory and order supplies
- Strong organizational skills and time management skills
- Physical ability to lift, move and position students for procedures and transporting
