Job Summary
Assists the Aquatics Site Supervisor in monitoring and coordinating the daily operation and maintenance of a City aquatics program site, including assistance in the training and monitoring of pool lifeguards and other aquatics staff.
- Current vacancy is for 32 hours per week. The eligibility list that is established from this recruitment will be used to fill all vacancies that occur during the duration of the eligibility list.
Representative Duties
Assists the Aquatics Site Supervisor in training and monitoring pool lifeguards and other aquatics staff. Coordinates activities and assists with scheduling.
Enforces swimming pool rules and regulations. Maintains order in and around the swimming pool.
Recognizes and performs aquatic emergency rescues, administers artificial respiration, CPR and first aid when necessary.
Oversees and assists in conducting aquatics program activities.
Assists in the scheduling and evaluation of staff.
Follows all applicable safety rules and regulations.
Makes recommendations regarding necessary equipment and supplies.
Serves as a pool lifeguard and swimming instructor, as required.
Handles and resolves program participant conflicts. Refers sensitive situations to appropriate supervisory staff.
Maintains program records and prepares reports as required.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills :
Knowledge of :
Water safety practices.
Swimming pool operations and maintenance functions.
Basic principles of group management and child development.
Effective customer service techniques.
Ability to :
Lead, coordinate and train other City aquatics staff.
Teach proper swimming techniques and water safety.
Prepare reports.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.
Provide effective customer service.
Skill in :
Appropriate swimming techniques.
Lifeguarding, first aid, AED and CPR techniques.
Reading, writing and communicating in English at an appropriate level.
Basic mathematics.
Education, Training and Experience :
High school graduation or equivalent.
One year or three summer seasons of recent, paid work experience as a pool lifeguard.
Licenses and Certificates :
Possession of a valid class C driver license. Possession of a valid American Red Cross or state recognized certificate in the following : CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. First Aid for Public Health and Safety Personnel (Title 22) is also required. Additional American Red Cross certifications are desirable.

If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS :
The work is regularly performed indoors and outdoors in variable weather conditions. May be required to work a varied schedule which may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Will be required to wear a uniform while on duty.
