Background : The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises, and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. The IRC in Northern California was established in 1975 in response to the needs of the growing refugee and immigrant population. Over the past 40 years, the IRC has resettled nearly 60,000 clients in Northern California. Originally focused on reception and placement, the IRC now provides a range of services including economic empowerment, immigration, community gardening, and case management for victims of trafficking

The IRC and IRC workers must adhere to the values and principles outlined in IRC Way - Standards for Professional Conduct. These are Integrity, Service and Accountability. In accordance with these values, the IRC operates and enforces policies on Beneficiary Protection from Exploitation and Abuse, Child Safeguarding, Anti Workplace Harassment, Fiscal Integrity, and Anti-Retaliation

This is a one-year fixed-term position with possibility to extend contingent on funding.

Responsibilities : Include, but are not limited to :

  • Act as primary instructor and facilitator for digital literacy program
  • Conduct program outreach to recruit and enroll new participants into the program
  • Conduct regularly scheduled program orientations to onboard new participants into the Digital Literacy program
  • Manage online learning platform and in-person classes including attendance, classroom management, etc.
  • Oversee provision of "office hours" for students to receive extra hands-on support from interns and volunteers.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer instructors; observe classes and provide coaching ad feedback incorporating pedagogical best practices.
  • Develop and administer student evaluation tools.
  • Maintain referral process and communication with program staff to ensure students are enrolled in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that programming and curriculum is linguistically sensitive and relevant to client population, and classroom environment is welcoming to all students.
  • Manage student attendance and retention to maximize program impact and meet program goals.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive attendance records and case notes.
  • Coordinate with team members to provide strengths-based and holistic educational programming to students.
  • Promote and actively participate in initiatives and efforts to build team engagement and cohesion in IRC Oakland office
  • Foster ongoing learning, honest dialogue and reflection to strengthen safeguarding and to promote IRC values and adherence to IRC policies.
  • Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities, and other duties as assigned.
  • Position Reports to : Program Manager
  • Position directly supervises : Volunteers and interns
  • Indirect Reporting : IRC Oakland leadership team
  • Other Internal and / or external contacts :

Internal : You will collaborate with internal programming including Early Employment and Career Development Departments, Financial Literacy Program Coordinator, Reception & Placement, and Health & Wellness.

  • External : You will develop working relationships with local service providers and community-based partners, as well as other stakeholders.
  • Job Requirements :

  • Undergraduate degree in Education or another relevant field, or relevant work experience. TESOL (or similar relevant) certification a plus.
  • At least two years' related professional experience; demonstrated experience developing and facilitating educational programming for underserved populations.
  • Experience working with adult learners from a variety of backgrounds and with multiple levels of English language skill required; work with newcomer populations desirable.
  • Experience designing curriculum and integrating technology utilizing Adult Education core principles.
  • Able to think creatively and strategically to overcome barriers and develop new program models.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly organized, attentive to detail, responsible, and flexible.
  • Self-starter with excellent analytical skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; fluency in a second language desirable
  • Driver's license with reliable vehicle for occasional travel throughout the service delivery area
  • Working Environment :
  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and 'field' time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
  • Occasional travel to satellite and partner sites throughout the Bay Area
  • May require occasional weekend and / or evening work.
  • Compensation : Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
