Job Posting Information Posting Number PG194144SP Internal Recruitment No Working Title Paralegal Anticipated Hiring Range $60,000 - $65,000 Work Schedule Monday-Friday; 8 : 00 am-5 : 00 pm Job Location Raleigh, North Carolina Department Office of General Counsel About the Department The NC State Office of General Counsel provides, manages and coordinates all legal services for the university in a collegial, responsive and professional manner. The office provides legal and risk management advice on a wide variety of matters to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, senior officers, other university administrators, and faculty and staff who are acting on behalf of the university. These matters include, but are not limited to, employment, student affairs, athletics, public records, real property, sponsored programs, intellectual property, purchasing and civil rights. The office represents the university in administrative proceedings before federal and state agencies and coordinates all litigation matters. Essential Job Duties This position within the Office of General Counsel encompasses a broad spectrum of responsibilities, reflecting the diverse functions of the office and the dynamic nature of the university environment. The role includes both traditional paralegal activities and innovative, creative, and technical tasks. The ideal candidate will excel in both areas.
In line with the American Bar Association’s standards and the North Carolina State Bar’s requirements for paralegals, traditional duties will include, but are not limited to :
- Coordinating litigation efforts and activities, including discovery, depositions, and legal briefs, with outside counsel.
- Proofreading, drafting, and finalizing various correspondence, legal documents, and reports.
- Assisting with mass document production, including analyzing, cataloging, and copying correspondence, policies, and other exhibit items.
- Managing bankruptcy and collection matters.
- Researching legal issues and conducting computer-assisted legal research.
- Assisting in-house counsel with compiling materials and responding to administrative complaints filed with government agencies (e.g., EEOC, OCR, OAH-CRD, DOL).
- Conducting routine and specific legal and factual research and data compilation as directed by attorneys.
- Performing preliminary document reviews of contracts and settlement agreements.
- Researching public records online and communicating with state and local officials.
- Issuing litigation holds.
- Preparing and filing proofs of claim and tracking bankruptcy actions.
- Assisting with the tort claims process, including communicating with Department of Justice investigators and claimants.
- Tracking open and closed cases and providing periodic reports as requested by the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel.
- Assisting with transactions, including preparing and maintaining documents and files.
- Assisting the University Records Officer in compiling and preparing responses to public records requests.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Additionally, this position will involve non-traditional, creative, and technical activities in support of the outreach efforts of the Office of General Counsel. These duties may include, but are not limited to :
