    Duties

    Duties include but are not limited to the following;

  • Make repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats with the aid of an journeyman level HVAC technician or electrician.
  • Receive work orders, oral instructions, and wiring diagrams that indicate the nature of the repair or installation to be made, the layout and placement of circuitry, fixtures, and controls, and the types of wiring, parts, and equipment installed.
  • Responsibility for planning, materials, tools, and techniques with little or no advice.
  • Works as a plumber repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Incumbent works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches.
  • Works as a painter and coats surfaces using accepted methods of the painting trade including special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining, but using coating materials that are prepared in special as well as common ways, and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.
  • Utilizes carpentry skills to construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
  • Locate broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment through visual check or through use of a small variety of test equipment, for example, test lamps, voltage testers, ammeters, and polarity testers.
  • Completes various HVAC related preventive maintenance tasks including but not limited to filter and belt replacement in air handlers, ceiling and floor mounted fan coil units. cleans and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning evaporator and condenser coils.
  • Must be able to work well with others having a good attitude and the ability to switch gears quickly as priorities can change on an hourly basis. Must contribute positively to the successful operation of the facilities department.

  • Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12 / 02 / 2024.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE : Applicant should have basic maintenance and repair experience. They should also have the ability to perform basic troubleshooting on equipment.

    EXPERIENCE : A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

    SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT : Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.     Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.     Physical Requirements / Working Conditions : The incumbent must be able to stand for long periods of time, work in confined or awkward, cramped spaces, be agile, strong and able to adapt to heat, dampness, etc.; able to lift heavy equipment up to 100 pounds with help. Duties are active involving climbing, pulling, kneeling, bending and walking for prolonged periods. Duties may require working from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms. The majority of the work will be performed in building areas that is open to the public within the medical center; although there will be occasions where employee will need to work in mechanical rooms, attics, crawl spaces, or exterior of buildings. Some work is performed in shop areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. When working at job sites, may be exposed to weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders and are subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions; may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty; may use protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves; works inside and outside and is exposed to danger of falling and from falling objects, cuts, bruises, electrical shock, burns and mashed fingers, etc
