Job description

Lead the Future of Transportation in Central Illinois

Join our team! Our mission is BUILDING COMMUNITIES. IMPROVING LIVES. With a history spanning over 110 years, HR Green has consistently delivered on this mission, establishing ourselves as a trusted partner for our colleagues, clients, and communities alike. Each day, we work to find solutions that inspire our employees and fit our clients' needs to build trust to exceed their expectations. As a leading player in the industry, we’re proud to be ranked No. 168 on Engineering News Record’s Top 500 Design Firms list in 2025. Our unwavering dedication to cultivating an exceptional workplace environment has earned us the distinguished honor of being recognized as a Best Place to Work.

Our Illinois Transportation Design team is expanding, and we’re seeking an experienced Transportation Project Manager to help shape our next chapter in central Illinois.

Based in our Peoria office, this is a rare opportunity to step into a visible, high-impact role where you’ll lead major transportation design projects, deepen relationships with key agencies, and directly influence how we grow in a rapidly developing market. You’ll be part of a team that values initiative, technical excellence, and collaboration—and you’ll have real opportunities to advance into broader leadership or even ownership roles.

If you’re looking for a place where you can make an immediate difference while continuing to do the engineering work you love, we’d like to talk.

Why This Role Matters

This role goes far beyond day-to-day project management—you will directly shape the future of HR Green’s transportation practice in central Illinois. As the Transportation Project Manager, you’ll secure and lead roadway and highway projects while cultivating key partnerships with IDOT, counties, and municipalities. Your work will position HR Green as a trusted, go-to consultant in a growing market.

You will also play a pivotal role in driving our market expansion. From identifying new opportunities to influencing strategic pursuits and strengthening our visibility in the region, your leadership will help determine which projects we pursue and how we deliver them. Your decisions, business development efforts, and client relationships will have a measurable impact on our growth trajectory, our team, and the communities we serve.

For a motivated Transportation Project Manager, this is an opportunity to leave a lasting mark—while building your own path toward broader leadership or even ownership within one of the nation’s most established engineering firms.

What You’ll Do…

Project Management

  • Lead roadway, highway, and multimodal transportation projects from concept through final design.
  • Use sound engineering judgment to independently complete tasks within federal, state, and local standards.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on schedule, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Provide technical direction, support key design decisions, and guide multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Conduct formal Project Reviews and uphold HR Green’s Quality Manual.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff, creating a strong pipeline for future growth.

Business Development

  • Proactively identify new opportunities and emerging client needs across central Illinois.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with IDOT, counties, municipalities, and private-sector partners.
  • Lead or support proposal and Statement of Interest development, including teaming strategies, technical approaches, and interview participation.
  • Lead or support agreement development, including scope, schedule and budget.
  • Expand existing client work by recognizing unmet needs and promoting HR Green’s full range of services.
  • Represent HR Green at industry conferences, networking events, and professional organizations to increase visibility and build strategic connections.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to support annual sales goals, pursuit strategies, and regional growth initiatives.

Client Management

  • Serve as a trusted technical and strategic advisor to clients.
  • Communicate proactively regarding project status, risks, and technical direction.
  • Lead public involvement and stakeholder engagement efforts, from small briefings to large public meetings.
  • Develop delivery strategies and share best practices internally to elevate project performance firmwide.

What You Bring…

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Civil Engineering required.
  • 10+ years of experience managing a variety of transportation projects, including at least 5 years working on IDOT projects (highly desired).
  • Proven experience delivering IDOT projects is required.
  • Experience with interstate, interchange, expressway, or urban arterial projects required; county, municipal, traffic, hydraulic, or field construction experience is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of project accounting and ability to manage multiple schedules and budgets simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills and a leadership style that fosters trust and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships across teams and with clients.
  • Proficiency with transportation design tools and standard office software.
