Job Description
Johnson County Health & Environment department is looking for a qualified candidate to fill the position of a Hazardous Materials Technician to work in the Environmental Division. The position is located at 11231 Mastin Street, Overland Park, 66210. This position will remain open until filled with first review of applicants on Thursday, April 7th, 2025.
Provides excellent customer service by assisting customers with questions regarding appropriate handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Sorts, packages, and labels all wastes according to applicable regulations. Prepares shipping containers for storing various chemicals that are collected according to regulations and facility permit requirements.
- Identifies and quantifies household hazardous waste (HHW) chemicals by chemical name or physical testing. Separates chemicals by type within the broader categories of corrosives, flammables, toxics, and reactive.
- Maintains the HHW facility by performing daily housekeeping duties and weekly safety inspections.
- Organizes free store inventory and the re-blended paint program.
Job Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements :
High school diploma or equivalent.
Applicant must submit to and pass a pre-employment, post-offer, and annual Hazard Materials Physical Examination and Respiratory Fit Test.
Johnson County Government requires reference / background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department / Agency.
Preferred Job Requirements :
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in related field of study, two (2) years of related experience is preferred.
OSHA 24 / 48 Hour HAZWOPER Certification preferred.
Fork Lift Certification preferred.
Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions :
Within sixty (60) days of hire, employees (select DHE and EMS positions) must produce proof of immunization, proof of immunity, proof that immunization is medically contraindicated, submit a written objection to immunization based upon a sincerely held religious belief, or receive vaccination for the following : Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR); Tetanus Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis (TDAP); and Varicella (Chickenpox).
Successful completion of Hazard Materials Physical Examination which includes Blood and Urine samples, auditory test, spirometry test, chest x-ray, Electrocardiogram (EKG), test for Hepatitis B plus vaccination, and a respiratory fit test.
All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
