Job Description

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering with Emphasis on Nuclear Engineering, College of Engineering [R0145864].

ROLE of the POSITION

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applications for a Full-Time, Tenure-Track, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on Nuclear Engineering. The earliest start date is July 1st, 2025.

We invite applicants with a strong multidisciplinary research record and expertise in nuclear engineering. Potential expertise areas of interest include but are not limited to multiscale / multiphysics modeling and simulation (M&S), intelligent control and operation of advanced nuclear systems, computational & experimental thermal hydraulics, multiphase flow, data science and machine learning (ML) for reactors design and safety, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), and nuclear thermal propulsion rockets.

The successful candidates will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate / graduate courses in their expertise areas and supervise master and doctoral students and participate in appropriate levels of service to the department, college, university, and the profession, as well as collaborating with faculty researchers within the department and the University. The candidates will also be expected to develop a vigorous and sustainable grant funded research program in his or her area of expertise that leads to personal professional development and publish results from research in scholarly journals.

PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT

The Mechanical Engineering department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs and two nuclear engineering graduate certificates. The department has aerospace engineering, materials and nuclear engineering, and biomedical engineering subprograms. Currently, the department has 18 full-time faculty and 4 staff, and more than 800 undergraduate and 80 graduate students. The interdisciplinary research environment, rapid metropolitan economic and population growth, and the entertainment and tourism industries co-located in southern Nevada and the surrounding region provide unique opportunities for research, teaching, and services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related fields from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and / or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with at least two years of teaching experience or postdoctoral experience in their area of expertise with a demonstrated record of excellence or experience in collaborative research are preferred.
