Medical Assistant Wellness Clinic

San Francisco Community Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) providing culturally competent, high-quality medical care, mental health services, education, and outreach. We are a safety-net for the LGBTQ community, the unsheltered community, people who use substances, and those with mental health needs. We are an anchor-organization for San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood and we also lead regional, statewide, and national programming. Our Wellness Clinic is a core function of San Francisco Community Health Center. In 2015, we became the first new Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in San Francisco in 40 years, enabling us to expand our capacity and provide full primary care services. The Wellness Clinic works in close collaboration with the Street Medicine team, Trans Thrive, Taimon Booton Navigation Center, and our other sites to coordinate primary care for patients accessing SFCHC services in multiple settings.

Medical Assistant will perform procedures under the Chief Medical Officer's oversight, ensure quality and efficient clinic service delivery from patient intake to visit completion, and build the clinic's administrative capacity to serve its intended population. Medical Assistant job duties are done within the clinic setting, as well as non-traditional setting, "beyond the 4-walls" of the clinic (ie. on the streets, encampments, SROs, and patients' homes, etc.) This role will protect and steward the integrity and reputation of San Francisco Community Health Center and its mission.

Essential Duties:

  • May occasionally cover front desk responsibilities, assisting with patient scheduling and determining patient eligibility and enrollment.
  • Provides patients with a high level of clinical service, from visit preparation, visit assistance, and follow-up activities.
  • Meets with clinicians (e.g., nursing, MA, NP and MD) for a daily morning huddle remotely or in person to review schedule and plan for the day.
  • Is familiar with and adherent to the Clinic Policies and Procedures relevant to their tasks.
  • Is responsible for advising the Clinic Manager and Chief Medical Officer of any change in status that would affect their ability to perform services.
  • Prepares patients for medical examination measuring vital signs, collecting patient history and chief complaint to the present to provider.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of patients and their families always maintaining HIPAA compliance.
  • Duties will also include sterilizing instruments, making appointments, assisting providers during procedures, patient education and entering patient information into the medical electronic records, venipuncture, vaccinations and other injections, and taking vital signs.
  • Assists with insurance and other payer contracting.
  • Submits and follows through on service authorizations from payers as needed.
  • Oversees and implements billing.
  • Ensures the clinic's compliance with applicable health care quality requirements.
  • Organizes meetings and work closely with other programs in the agency to ensure the clinic is highly integrated (e.g., IT, transgender services, HIV testing, etc.)
  • Keeps track of meeting minutes, clinic tasks and responsibilities and ensures follow up by staff and volunteers.
  • Responsibilities as described in the Administrative Policies & Procedures for SFCHC, the MA Training and Competency Checklist, and in accordance with applicable state regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience as a medical assistant in a medical practice or clinic and/or certified in California as a Medical Assistant by a MA certification program and the California Department of Public Health.
  • Experience performing phlebotomy, trouble-shooting difficult sticks, and medication injections.
  • Proven ability to be highly organized and task-oriented consistently paying attention to details.
  • Experience in positions with demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • Sensitivity to issues affecting LGBTIQQ and communities of color (e.g., Asians, Pacific Islanders, Latinos/Latinas, African Americans, Native Americans).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to think analytically and creatively to solve day-to-day problems.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, email.
  • Must obtain TB clearance (within past 12 months) and complete background check upon hire.
  • Current with vaccinations including latest Covid-19 vaccine with at least one booster, Tdap, MMI, Hep C, and seasonal flu, and able to provide proof.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bi-Lingual in English and any other language
  • Experience working in an FQHC or other type of Community Health Center.
