The Mortgage Underwriter will work at our corporate office in Metairie. This position is classified as hybrid, which means that this person will work in the office 2 or more days a week but may work from home if needed by the organization. The Mortgage Underwriter position has the initial salary of $26 to $30 / hour, with consideration for skills and experience. This is a non-exempt position. The Mortgage Underwriter has the opportunity to grow within the organization. Role : Reviews, evaluates, and then accepts / denies mortgage loan files using the internal Underwriting Standards, as well as general FNMA and FHLMC underwriting guidelines, to determine creditworthiness of the applicant. Major Duties and Responsibilities :
- Underwrite Conventional and Portfolio, 1st and second mortgage loans including FHA, USDA and VA residential ensuring they comply with FNMA, FHLMC, Investor and Government agency guidelines.
- Analyze employment profile, credit worthiness, asset documentation and other pertinent information.
- Analyze property characteristics and all other information pertinent to credit and property decision.
- Respond to product questions and scenarios with suitable answers.
- Ensure compliance with underwriter standards.
- Provide prompt and quality customer service both internally and externally by explaining credit decision and offering alternative options when necessary.
- Maintains quality, and production standards.
- Adheres to set turnaround times for reviewing new submissions as well as resubmissions.
Knowledge and Skills Experience :
Certifications required :
Education : Bachelor's degree in business, banking, or finance a plus. Other Skills : Is responsible for a width of information including but not limited to the organizations current mortgage loan interest rates, commitment / rate lock / relock fee procedures, consumer loan products / rates / guidelines that are used in conjunction with Mortgage Lending (Execulines, second mortgage products, swing loans, land loans, etc.), any loan origination software system. ADA Requirements Physical Requirements : Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance. Working Conditions : Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise. Mental and / or Emotional Requirements : Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and / or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
