Job Description
BRIEF DESCRIPTION :
As part of a secondary teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes in the field of music to pupils in grades 7-12, and assists in other school programs as assigned.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) to secondary pupils. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law and administrative code and procedures of the school district.
- Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Encourages pupils to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.
- Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
- Maintains surveillance over school-owned music, robes, uniforms, musical instruments and equipment in order to prevent loss or abuse.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment during individual practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
- Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group. Prepares progress reports.
- Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community. Applies knowledge of district procedures and limitations set on performances.
- Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education workshop and clinics provided by the district, and / or in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
1. Credential : Appropriate California teaching credential
2. Education : Bachelor’s degree with music major or minor, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. Choral teachers : ability to sing. Instrumental teachers : ability to play at least one standard orchestral instrument.
