Brief Description of Duties / Responsibilities
The Department of Music seeks to fill a full time, tenure track, 10-month position to begin August 2026. The department offers a NASM-accredited Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy, as well as minors in Music and Music, Technology, and Media.
Primary teaching duties will be in the area of music technology, including Introduction to Music Technology and upper-level courses in the Music major and minor in Music, Technology, and Media. The successful candidate will bring knowledge and applied experience of contemporary music, facility with current music software and production tools, and the ability to develop curricular offerings in areas that may include music technology, production, sound design, sound engineering / recording, editing / mixing, songwriting / composition, and business / industry.
Additional teaching duties will be assigned based on the successful candidate's teaching and professional expertise and may include :
- Courses in theory, musicianship, and arranging.
- Courses in music history, including music appreciation and style surveys of various periods / genres. Expertise in contemporary musical styles and media (film, videogames) is of particular interest.
- Leadership of Southern's "small" ensembles (6-10 musicians), which perform in diverse styles. Expertise in leading bands performing commercial / contemporary repertoire is of particular interest.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, faculty are expected to engage in scholarship / creative activity, service to the department and University, professional participation, and student advising.
