JOB TITLE : Histology Technologist

DEPARTMENT : Histology

FLSA STATUS : Non-Exempt

GRADE : 905

REPORTS TO : Supervisor, Histology Department

POSITION SUMMARY

The Histology Technologist will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include logging, batching, cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received from surgical or diagnostic cases are sorted, logged and prioritized according to the standards required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Retrieves and / or receives specimens
• Sorts specimens according to priority and difficulty of procedures and records in the Pathology log
• Emends specimens into blocks
• Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections and staining of slides
• Prepares solutions, stains and reagents in accordance with written procedures
• Operates and maintains all histology lab equipment in proper state of readiness and cleanliness
• Records number of tissue blocks verifying proper identification and label
• Performs and monitors inventory of supplies, equipment and reagents used; places orders for replacements as required
• Assists the Pathologist in gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen section procedures
• Maintains that quality tissue specimen slides and stain results are obtained and delivered to the Pathologist within established quality standards
• Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures. Maintains proficiency and competency in performance for the testing menu of the division or section.
• Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure. Coordinates review and revision of the Laboratory Safety Procedures
