Position Details :

The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (COM) at Washington State University is seeking an Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (AD GME) . This role holds a unique opportunity to serve across the state of Washington to oversee and lead all GME programs through strategic planning, development, and innovation throughout the state. Washington State University COM, as the community based medical school, currently sponsors residency programs including Internal Medicine in Everett, WA, Family Medicine in Pullman, WA and Pediatrics in Spokane, WA. There is strong interest across the state to partner with WSU COM to continue to develop new residency and fellowship programs. This position is key to leading this transformational change that will help meet the needs of Washington communities, collaborating with them to help improve access and quality of care. The role is responsible for the establishment and oversight of residency and fellowship programs at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine.

The position may be based at any of the current campuses located in Washington state such as Spokane, Everett, Pullman, Tri-Cities or Vancouver, with a preference for Spokane, WA.

The position will allow for flexibility to accommodate the incumbent's clinical activities with a mutually agreed upon FTE of 80-100%.

Duties and Responsibilities :

50% – GME Strategic Planning :

  • Oversee all facets of strategic and operational planning, development, implementation, monitoring / assessment, and continuous quality improvement of graduate medical education.
  • Create and maintain an ongoing strategic plan for GME that aligns with COM and University Strategic Plans.
  • Fosters strong relationships within and outside the COM to promote collaboration with the Office of GME.
  • Align resources with COM clinical enterprise strategic plan while contributing meaningfully to the workforce needs of Washington.
  • Participates in institutional efforts that span the educational continuum, including competency-based transitions from medical school to GME as well as the use of data in continuing professional development to change behavior, impact systems, and improve patient outcomes.
  • Works collaboratively with college executive leadership, clinical partners, and affiliated organizations to integrate education and clinical missions.
  • Works collaboratively to engage with philanthropic and grant development to build and maintain GME financial sustainability.
  • Expands the number of WSU GME programs, working with clinical and community partners to address community needs.

35% – GME Administrative

  • Ensures the success of the WSU GME programs, including maintaining accreditation for all programs.
  • Ensures the development and maintenance of healthy clinical learning environments in all locations that COM residents and clinical fellowships train.
  • Oversee a continuous educational improvement model for the overall GME program.
  • Lead, supervise and mentor program directors, provides annual evaluations, and supports opportunities for professional development.
  • Ensures the availability of needs-based faculty and professional development, through partnership with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Continuing Professional Development
  • Provides guidance and problem-solving support on a wide range of residency personnel and program issues.
  • Responds to concerns or inquiries about the activities and operation of residency programs in a manner requiring considerable knowledge of policies and procedures.
  • Maintains budgetary oversight of GME operations within and affiliated with the COM.
  • 15% – GME Service

  • Participates in college and university committees.
  • Models’ professionalism and leadership.
  • Fosters diversity and inclusion and supports inter-professionalism.
  • Promotes a positive work / learning environment in all academic and clinical settings.
  • Contributes to building strong relationships with COM stakeholders and constituents.
  • Miscellaneous duties related to the Departmental, College, and University missions; participation in faculty meetings as invited or requested.
  • Required Qualifications :

  • MD, DO, or equivalent earned degree
  • Experience teaching at an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada, and eligible for joining as faculty at the COM.
  • Demonstrated success in developing, coordinating, or implementing medical education programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge base regarding current national initiatives and developments in graduate medical education.
  • Experience interacting with the ACGME or other educational accrediting bodies.
  • Experience with innovative educational methodologies and health care delivery systems.
  • Service in a senior leadership role in a community based medical school or academic health center.
  • Experience and / or demonstrated appreciation of diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • Ability to drive and travel overnight
  • Additional Required Qualifications for Candidates in all tracks at Associate rank :

  • Current or previous appointment at the Associate rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience determined to be equivalent.
  • Record of accomplishments applicable to the sub-track in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship and / or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for associate rank.
  • Additional Required Qualifications for Candidates in all tracks at Full professor rank :

  • Current or previous appointment at the full professor rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience determined to be equivalent.
  • Record of accomplishments applicable to the sub-track in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship and / or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for full professor rank.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated scholarly activity within health professions education
  • Demonstrated success in leading the development and accreditation of a GME program.

    Annual Salary : The base salary for the Career Track position is $245,190-$317,000 at 100% FTE. This salary range is commensurate with qualifications, earned degree, track and rank determination.

    While serving as Associate Dean, this position will be eligible for annually renewed administrative stipend of $30,000-50,000 commensurate with qualifications.

    In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
