Job Summary
Under the direction of a radiologist, performs diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures utilizing gamma cameras and other related equipment. Prepares radio-pharmaceuticals and performs quality control procedures according to requirements and guidelines of the Colorado's radiation regulations (State of Colorado Rules and Regulations Pertaining to Radiation Control, 6 CCR 1007-1). Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients through oral or IV injection routes, following verification of patient identification to prevent misuse of the isotope and guarantee patient safety. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions :
- Performs diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures according to established protocols and / or specific radiologist instructions. Orders and injects the appropriate radioisotope for the patient examination; performs the requisite quality control procedures (pre- and post-examination), and properly documents all activities. Effectively interacts with Denver Health's PACS system through compliance with data entry, image post-processing, image archiving tasks, image quality assurance, and other related user interface activities. Uses Epic to input patient examination data and to place patient orders (as appropriate). Verifies the physician order and relevant patient's history in Epic. Prior to performance of a nuclear medicine examination, consults with the relevant radiologist to obtain a written imaging study protocol. (45%)
- Ensures patient safety, comfort, and personal dignity by following appropriate patient care guidelines to include use of 2 patient identifiers. Performs equipment calibration and other quality control activities. Participates in nuclear medicine inspections performed by representatives from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment leading to no violations. (20%)
- Documents receipt of radioactive materials according to requirements of Denver Health's Radioactive Materials License. Notates within the appropriate electronic / hardcopy document, as necessary, all pertinent patient information to comply with patient screening, ordering, charting, and medical record requirements. Assists in the maintenance of department inventory by ordering, stocking, and performing inventory checks on those medical supplies utilized when performing nuclear medicine examinations. Maintains imaging equipment by performing scheduled cleanings and tests; results of all cleanings and tests are documented, as appropriate. Contacts service personnel and notifies supervisory staff of equipment malfunctions. (20%)
- Maintains a clean and orderly working environment through wiping down examination tables, changing linens, stocking supplies, and washing / disinfecting nuclear medicine equipment. Attends and participates in departmental huddles, general intradepartmental meetings, and Radiology's inservices. (5%)
- Promotes positive interpersonal (customer) relationships with fellow employees, physicians, patients, and visitors. Treats these individuals with courtesy, dignity, empathy, and respect; consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communications.
