Job Summary : Under the limited direction of the attending Physician or designee, the Nurse Practitioner obtains and records patient medical history; performs physical examinations; orders, evaluates and monitors medical and laboratory diagnostic tests and treatment plans. Prepares, develops and initiates treatment plan in consultation with attending physician; performs routine invasive procedures; performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Educates and counsels patient and family members on condition, desired results of treatment plans, expectations during illness and recovery, and other related areas. Participates in the management of patient's care, determining need for consultation to ensure the continuity and quality of care. Job Description : Essential Duties and Responsibilities : Obtain and record patients'medical history Perform physical examinations, assess patients' conditions / symptoms and document results in the electronic medical record Perform diagnostic, therapeutic and routine invasive procedures; document findings and data in the electronic medical record Order, evaluate and monitor medical and laboratory screening and diagnostic tests, treatment plans including laboratory tests, x-rays, pharmaceuticals, blood products and interdisciplinary consultations Prescribe medications and educate patients regarding reasons for prescribing, medication interactions and side effects Prepare, develop and initiate inpatient and outpatient treatment plans in consultation with attending physicians Educate and counsel patients and family members on health conditions, desired results of treatment plans, expectations during illness and recovery and other related areas Conduct patient rounds and document assessments, diagnoses and treatment plans in progress notes Perform a variety of patient care activities in assigned outpatient clinics (e.g. surgical procedures, pre- and post-operative care, etc.) Prepare patient discharge summaries Refer patients to physicians, speciality services and community organizations as needed Respond to patient emergencies and initiate appropriate treatments Establish and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the department and / or practice Supervisory Responsibilities : None Additional Responsibilities : Participate in department / clinical research as directed Other duties as may be assigned Qualifications : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and / or Experience : Graduate of an accredited Acute Care, Adult Primary Care or Family Nurse Practitioner program Master's Degree in Nursing Current Michigan Registered Nurse License 3 years professional experience in an acute setting preferred Supervisory and / or management experience required Current ANCC or AANP Certification Current BLS Certification; ACLS Certification preferred Knowledge of nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care Knowledge of OSHA, MIOSHA, JACHO and HIPPA regulations Knowledge of Public Health Code and Michigan Nurse Practice Act preferred Skills and Abilities Required : Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations Good written and verbal communication skills to convey and receive information effectively (face-to-face, telephone and electronic) Good analytical and judgment skills Ability to use computer software programs and systems Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patients, personnel and / or financial data Excellent organizational skills to work independently, prioritize, handle multiple tasks and manage time Safety Requirements : Compliance with departmental Health and Safety policies and procedures Mandatory TB test annually (based on Department guidelines) Physical Demands : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
