Deputy District Coordinator

BASIC FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Senator, Chief of Staff, and District Coordinator, the Deputy District Coordinator (Deputy DC) will assist the District Coordinator with various aspects of district operations, including, in some cases serving as the lead senior staff in a Senate district satellite office where they will play a key role in establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with staff, and overseeing staff schedules, and supporting the needs of district representatives. In coordination with the Chief of Staff and District Coordinator, the Deputy DC may be assigned to manage special projects or events. Additionally, the Deputy DC is expected to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with elected officials, community leaders, and business groups, among other groups and constituents in the district. The Deputy DC must operate as a leader and must model the highest level of professionalism in representing the Senator in the district.

DUTIES: Under the direction of the Senator, Chief of Staff, and District Coordinator, the Deputy DC will represent or staff the Senator at meetings, events, and functions with constituents, and community groups. The Deputy DC also assists with developing district office protocols and procedures, and establishing a district office culture of excellence and respect. The Deputy DC will assist with the development of a long-range calendar of district events and may be assigned to oversee the progress of constituent casework, district event implementation and staff reports. The Deputy DC will build and maintain constructive relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders; assist employees in meeting their assignments and providing support and guidance to ensure deadlines and projects are completed timely and successfully. On behalf of the District Coordinator and the Senator, the Deputy DC may assign and train staff on special projects, events, constituent casework or other tasks and will bring personnel matters to the attention of the District Coordinator and Chief for Staff for them to address. The Deputy DC will communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; design, manage, and evaluate programs; recommend improvements to the district office protocols and procedures to ensure a successful operation, and maintain a cooperative and effective working relationship with staff and the Member.

DESIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: The ideal candidate must be familiar with the legislative district, and the legislative process, as well as the structure and policies of state government; effective coalition building; community development; public relations; basic office computer applications and social media platforms; the Senate's personnel rules, policies, and best practices regarding staff supervision, sexual harassment, and Equal Employment Opportunities. Candidates must have great organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, professional environment. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently and also demonstrate the ability to work well in teams and lead teams or projects. Candidates must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; respond to various types of correspondence; work effectively under pressure while maintaining a positive and respectful attitude; and deliver excellent customer service.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree required. At least three (3) years relevant experience required. Legislative experience preferred. Before being hired, candidates for this position are required to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Employee Pull Notice Program and must complete a DMV Form INF 1101, which authorizes the release of their driving record to the Senate Rules Committee. You must possess a valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record. In addition, you are required to have proof of liability insurance at all times. NOTE: Information from your driving record will be shared with the hiring supervisor which may impact your hiring status.

LOCATION, HOURS, SALARY AND FILING DATE: This position is located in San Jose, CA and requires in person attendance. The Senate's core business hours are 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and may require after hours, holiday, or weekend work. Final salary will be commensurate with experience and education. Seniority and significant experience are required to reach the higher end of the salary range.
