Join our dynamic team of criminal prosecutors and legal staff in our Orange Office protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities and to safeguarding our state’s healthcare programs! The Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse investigates and prosecutes complex criminal cases in state courts, including (1) fraud committed against the Medi-Cal programs by providers, such as licensed physicians, pharmacists, and nurses and others, and (2) criminal abuse and neglect of elder and dependent adults in nursing homes and other residential care facilities. We are looking for you if you are a team-oriented, well-organized self-starter seeking to serve justice for your fellow Californians.
Under the supervision of the Supervising Deputy Attorney General, the Legal Secretary performs legal secretarial duties in support of the Orange Office’s legal team. The Legal Secretary adheres to office procedures, ensures all legal documents are skillfully drafted, proofread, formatted, and files and serves said documents in accordance with legal requirements and court deadlines. At the Orange Office, the Legal Secretary maintains internal databases and systems and organizes voluminous case files complying with federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations, as well as office policies and practices. The Legal Secretary drafts, reviews, and process office correspondence, maintains office calendars, and processes subpoenas and travel.
Duty Statement
40%Types, reviews, edits, processes, stores, formats, retrieves, serves, and files legal documents and correspondence, such as pleadings, briefs, motions, and subpoenas, as well as other related legal documents, in state courts, on the defense and third parties, using modern office technology, methods and procedures as required; assures all documents are prepared, proofread, copied, and processed to meet legal requirements and deadlines; under the direction of the prosecuting attorney or legal analyst, prepares and assists with the preparation of discovery, including the organization, indexing, numbering, copying, and serving of discovery to the defense; uses law libraries, computer databases, and software programs to check case citations and quotations, reviews and prepares jury instructions and verdict forms using statutory and case law; notates and calendars staff meetings and appointments, court appearances, and statutory deadlines; and transcribes complex dictations, including, but not limited to, audio recordings, interviews, and meetings.
30%Provides ProLaw case management support; adds docket events following case events and court appearances; reviews and edits daily reports; formats reviews, and scans documents associated with docket events, e.g. pleadings, motions, and transcripts; tracks status of locally and federally prosecuted cases; schedules, reviews, and finalizes case closures, uses state and federal court databases to obtain case information, such as PACER, LexisNexus, and Westlaw; finalizes and reports sentencing information for and to Headquarters, partner agencies, and the Office of Inspector General; assists with reports and ProLaw queries; offers assistance to legal analyst as needed; and processes invoices.
20%Performs data entry; accesses and searches various databases; assists with necessary deadlines and filings; acts as backup for the legal analyst; makes travel arrangements; requests travel advances, and prepares travel expense claims.
10%Assists legal team with preparing for litigation, such as preliminary hearings, grand jury proceedings, law and motions, and jury trials.
