BH Pharmacy Manager of Oncology/Hematology

The BH Pharmacy Manager of Oncology/Hematology is responsible for leading, supporting, and managing the oncology pharmacy team in the development of strategies and initiatives to improve patient care, satisfaction and system wide goal value setting. The role ensures compliance with departmental, local, state, and federal regulatory standards policies and procedures, mission and core value statements. The manager collaborates with healthcare providers and other key stakeholders to meet patient care needs.

Safety

  • Participate in and lead the design, implementation and management of a safe, high-quality, and effective medication use system.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy liaisons and support personnel, to maintain high standards of service and safety.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that support safe, efficient, and high-quality pharmacy services.
  • Embrace the BH Daily Management system to improve patient safety and promote medication event reporting.
  • Oversee medication management processes including procurement, preparation, storage, and distribution to ensure accuracy and safety in all settings.

Essential Duties

  • Exclusive collaboration with the cancer clinical teams and active involvement in cancer therapeutics.
  • Manage human resource functions, including recruitment, performance evaluations, staff development, training, orientation, scheduling, and disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Create and maintain a healthy work environment where staff feel supported, accountable, and engaged in organizational initiatives.
  • Being engaged in the department, including managing up, owning team decisions, and supporting departmental and organizational initiatives.
  • Hold self and others to the highest ethical standards and act with honor above all.
  • Regularly schedule meetings with direct reports.
  • Effective human resource management, including effectively disciplining people, recognizing people, completing performance evaluations, and guiding people in professional development.
  • Acts as a liaison to and communicates regularly with interdisciplinary leadership teams.
  • Stays current with trends and developments in pharmacy practice and healthcare.
  • Assist with project management, including planning, execution, stakeholder engagement, and presenting findings to senior leadership.
  • Oversee high-cost drug utilization for the ambulatory areas utilizing Oncology/Hematology and other high-cost specialty drugs.
  • Provide on-call support as required, maintaining readiness to address urgent pharmacy operational and clinical needs.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and support audits and regulatory inspections as needed.

Quality

  • Oversee the entire medication use process, from procurement to administration, to ensure we have the right medications at the right time for the right patients.
  • To achieve value for the health system, utilize interdisciplinary strategies to improve medication-related outcomes, compliance with evidence-based prescribing criteria, and formulary management.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop and maintain policies, guidelines, and formulary options to provide state-of-the-art clinical care to our patients.
  • Ensure continued compliance with all national, state, and local regulations and their management; these include the DEA, CMS (including 340b program where applicable), Joint Commission, and Department of Public Health (Board of Pharmacy)
  • Leverage technology and pharmacy automation systems to enhance and optimize medication dispensing and preparation workflows and process improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor and report on quality metrics and improvement initiatives to key stakeholders.

  • Ensure pharmacy support is provided to our Research partners at BH where needed
  • Ensure pharmacy team members are adequately trained and meet the requirements set by accrediting bodies or the needs of the job/job assignment.
  • Optimize residency and students to provide a pipeline of team members for the workforce.
  • Support education and training for pharmacy staff, healthcare providers, and patients
  • Supervise and mentor pharmacy team members, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.

Value

  • Collaborate with hematology and oncology clinical teams to develop and implement clinical programs that enhance patient care and optimize therapeutic outcomes.
  • Develop and implement training programs for pharmacy staff, the PGY2 oncology pharmacy resident, and students, to ensure clinical and operational competency and foster professional development and continuous learning.
  • Train and mentor pharmacy staff according to defined outcome expectations and responsibilities, supporting education and maximizing professional potential.
  • Involvement and accountability of finances and revenue. Identify cost savings and revenue generation opportunities. Supporting margin improvement, including exploring strategic initiatives and partnerships.
  • Participate in budget development and financial management, including identifying cost-saving opportunities and managing drug budgets effectively. Monitor expenses and optimize resource utilization
  • Support financial processes such as forecasting needs, conducting financial assessments of value.
  • Assist with the management of productivity, with a focus on schedule creation and management but including the development of a knowledge of metrics, awareness of performance in real time and demonstrating an ability to adjust to meet productive standards through flexing staff and adjusting schedules.

Skills/Competencies

  • Strong clinical knowledge in oncology and infusion therapies. Comprehensive understanding of all the procedures, systems, and equipment used by pharmacists and technicians in the pharmacy as well as a high level of proficiency in performing duties and responsibilities.
  • High level of analytical ability, organizational and personal management skills to function as a role model and focus to ensure a concerted approach to operations.
  • Must also be able to evaluate current pharmacy services and procedures to improve them by gathering data from a wide variety of sources through an evaluative research process. In addition, have some practice experience working with, as well as, revising and/or implementing information systems.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to relate to hospital healthcare personnel working cooperatively and collaboratively to resolve situations and problems, as well as effectively communicating and displaying leadership within and outside of the department.
  • High level of proficiency with standard software used in healthcare office settings (e.g. MS Word, Excel, web browser, etc.). Experience with pharmacy and clinical databases systems (such as QS1, Centricity, Cerner, SCM etc.) are a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities

Required Education/Experience

  • Advance Degree (Master's, MBA), Doctor of Pharmacy, and/or completion of an accredited residency
  • PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY-2 Pharmacy Specialty or HSPAL Residency or
  • PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency and 2 years of pertinent experience or
  • Minimum four (4) years of pertinent pharmacy experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of leadership / supervisory experience

Preferred Experience

  • Oncology/Infusion Experience

Licensure

  • Licensure as a pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the hire date.
