Vice Chancellor for Extension and Outreach

Job Description Summary

The Vice Chancellor for Extension and Outreach is responsible for assisting the Southern University Agricultural Research & Extension Center (SUAREC or SU Ag Center) Chancellor-Dean in promoting and expanding the outreach mission of SUAREC and the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) by increasing and supporting the extension and outreach activities locally and to all 64 parishes of Louisiana. Specifically, the Vice Chancellor for Extension and Outreach will provide support in the development and implementation of extension programming in Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), Family and Consumer Sciences, Economic Development, Nutrition and Health, and Youth Development. The Vice Chancellor for Extension and Outreach will also have oversight of the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Institute (SARDI), which is in Opelousas, Louisiana. This satellite campus of the cooperative extension program is responsible for the delivery of youth, agriculture, and community outreach programs in a 10-parish area. The four program areas of (1) ANR, (2) Family and Consumer Sciences / Community and Economic Development, (3) Youth Development and, (4) SARDI are led by three program leaders and a director (for SARDI). The successful candidate will assist extension agents, specialists, and program leaders in securing funds for outreach activities, develop and enhance partnerships, as well as collaborate with other institutions, industries, and state and federal agencies (e.g., United States Department of Agriculture [USDA], the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Louisiana State University (LSU) Agricultural Center. The Vice Chancellor for Extension and Outreach is a full-time, 12-month position, and reports directly to the Chancellor-Dean.

Specific Duties : The Vice Chancellor for Extension and Outreach will provide dynamic leadership for articulating and implementing a shared vision for extension and outreach and will be a leader in addressing the state, regional, and national issues of compelling interest to the communities and citizens served. More specifically, these responsibilities include but are not limited to :

• Promote and expand the extension mission of the SUAREC by increasing and supporting outreach activities of faculty, students, and partners / collaborators.
• Provide leadership for strategic planning and prioritizing extension needs.
• Provide guidance and leadership to faculty through collaborations, the development of professional enhancement programs, and assistance in seeking and obtaining extramural funding.
• Provide the day-to-day leadership of the Extension personnel and associated locations.
• Develop and maintain an electronic repository of extension activities and projects of the faculty, staff, students, and collaborators.
• Coordinate the preparation of the five-year plans of work required by the USDA and the 1890 Extension Program, as required for SUAREC.
• Prepare annual reports of progress on extension projects.
• Communicate funding opportunities and deadlines to faculty in an effective manner.
• Provide data and reports related to extension programs and efforts to various internal and external groups and constituents.
• Provide leadership to ensure that up-to-date information is available to stakeholders, faculty, and others through a variety of communications, such as the SU Cooperative Extension page on SUAREC’s website and publications.
• Provide oversight to ensure compliance mandates are met by the University and make recommendations as needed.
• Actively engage with and develop relationships with funding agencies, program managers, industries, commodity groups, and other stakeholders.
• Continuously advance and assess the extension and outreach-related collaborations and partnerships with the LSU Cooperative Extension Service, under the auspices of the LSU AgCenter.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The individual selected will supervise the areas of the SU Cooperative Extension Program and extension-related buildings of the SUAREC.
