Job description

POSITION:

The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education (ADUE) is responsible for overseeing initiatives that support and enhance the undergraduate experience within the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS). The ADUE shall provide leadership in the following areas: Outreach and Recruitment, Academic Advising, and Student Success. Embedded in these areas is the responsibility for curriculum development, interdisciplinary programs, scholarships, dual degree programs, transfer students, the first-year program, and other duties as assigned. The ADUE will report directly to the Dean, serve as a member of the executive leadership team, and is also expected to take an active role in university initiatives and leadership. The successful candidate will be a forward thinking, initiative-minded leader with a passion for developing new approaches to enhance enrollment, retention, and student success.

The ADUE will be appointed Associate Professor or Professor in one of the six academic departments in ECS (Bioengineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Engineering). Therefore, an established and continuing program of research is expected, along with some classroom teaching. Additionally, the ADUE is encouraged to secure external funding in support of undergraduate student recruitment and retention activities.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Outreach and Recruitment

  • Participate in outreach programs aimed at introducing middle and high school students to the fields of engineering and computer science.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive recruitment plan to meet enrollment goals.
  • Develop and implement campus visitation programs and other recruitment events.
  • Establish and manage policies related to Admissions and Scholarships.
  • Institute and maintain articulation agreements with feeder institutions to facilitate seamless transfer for students entering the UT Dallas Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Student Success

  • Design, advance and direct programs for currently enrolled students related to Advising, Scholarships, Undergraduate Research, Capstone, First-Year Program, International Experiences and Academic Issues.
  • Advocate for and work to increase the involvement of students in ECS.
  • Support and be the voice for student organizations in ECS.
  • Administer ECS’s undergraduate scholarship program.

Academic Programs

  • Support the development and management of a First Year Program.
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Dean for Assessment all ECS accreditation activities with ABET and SACSCOC.
  • Represent the Jonsson School on the UT Dallas Council for Undergraduate Education (CUE).
  • Chair ECS’s Undergraduate Council.
  • Curriculum and Program Maintenance (e.g., Bulletin issues, course creation, and deletion).
  • Coordinate ECS’s degree audit activities including certification of graduation requirements for undergraduate students.
  • Serve on university committees relevant to enrollment management, accreditation, curriculum, student, and academic issues.

Management

  • Supervise the office staff including an Assistant Dean for Student Success, Directors of Outreach and Recruiting, Advising, First-Year Program, Student Success, and other key staff.

Resources and Personnel

  • Represent the School at public, university, and campus events in the absence of the Dean.

Research and Teaching

  • Maintain an active research program, mentor doctoral students, and engage in classroom teaching.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education and Experience: The ideal candidate must be strongly committed to fulfilling the undergraduate academic mission of the Jonsson School, a strong advocate for students, hold the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and possess the qualifications necessary for tenure within one of the Jonsson School’s six academic departments.

Compelling candidates will demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Ability to establish excellent working relationships with students, faculty, academic department chairs, and campus-wide administrative offices.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and collaborative skills.
  • Earned Ph.D. or Sc.D. in their field and a strong record of research and teaching accomplishments commensurate with appointment as Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Ability to lead by example and a demonstrated commitment to transparency and creating a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. UTD are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
