Essential Job Functions for Outside Sales

The sales team is pivotal in driving revenue and fostering strong customer relationships. This role is intensely focused on proactive outside sales and cultivating relationships in the field. The ideal candidate will be a results-driven hunter, passionate about generating new business and expanding market share. Deep product knowledge and the ability to conduct impactful on-site consultations are crucial.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Proactive Outside Sales & Relationship Building :

Aggressively prospect and qualify new leads within target markets (architects, developers, contractors).

  • Conduct frequent, strategic in-person visits to client sites, offices, and project locations to build rapport and deeply understand project needs.
  • Cultivate and maintain robust, long-term relationships with key decision-makers.
  • Actively engage in industry events, trade shows, and targeted networking to expand the customer base and generate qualified leads.
  • On-Site Consultations & Product Expertise :
  • Perform thorough on-site evaluations to precisely assess project requirements and recommend optimal rock product solutions (gravel, pebbles, specialty aggregates).

  • Provide expert-level product knowledge , effectively demonstrating the unique value and benefits of inventory offerings.
  • Deliver compelling, tailored presentations and provide relevant product samples to potential clients.
  • Generate accurate and timely quotes directly from the jobsite.
  • Wholesale Sales & Order Management :
  • Focus on securing high-volume wholesale orders from architects, developers, and contractors.

  • Ensure accurate and efficient processing of sales orders , coordinating seamlessly with the dispatch team for timely delivery.
  • Proactively pursue leads and follow up on outstanding quotes to close sales and achieve revenue targets.
  • Identify and capitalize on upselling and cross-selling opportunities to maximize order value.
  • Market Intelligence & Competitive Analysis :
  • Conduct comprehensive market research to identify emerging trends, potential opportunities, and competitive threats.

  • Monitor competitor activities, pricing strategies, and product offerings.
  • Provide valuable, actionable market insights to the sales manager and leadership team.
  • Provide direct field feedback concerning product demand, customer concerns, and competitive activity.
  • Negotiation & Contract Management :
  • Skillfully negotiate pricing and contract terms to maximize profitability while ensuring customer satisfaction and long-term partnerships.

  • Develop and present persuasive proposals that effectively address customer needs and highlight the unique value proposition of inventory products.
  • Collaborate with management to develop and implement effective contract strategies.
  • Sales Reporting & Performance Tracking :
  • Maintain meticulous records of all sales activities, customer interactions, and order details within the CRM system.

  • Generate regular, insightful sales reports and analyze performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and optimize sales strategies.
  • Consistently meet or exceed established sales targets and quotas.
  • Overall, the sales team plays a key role in driving revenue and building strong customer relationships. They are effective communicators, understand customer needs, negotiate effectively, and contribute to the overall success of the company by generating sales and promoting its products.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in outside sales, preferably in the construction, landscaping, or related industry.

  • Demonstrated track record of success in generating new business and exceeding sales targets.
  • Industry Knowledge :
  • Strong understanding of the landscaping and construction industries.

  • Familiarity with various types of rock products and their applications.
  • Sales Skills :
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

  • Strong negotiation and closing skills.
  • Ability to build rapport and establish long-term relationships with clients.
  • Proficiency in CRM software and sales tools.
  • Personal Attributes :
  • Self-motivated, driven, and results-oriented.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

  • Valid Driver's License and reliable transportation.
