Description

Under general direction, to assist the public in the use of County parks, its recreation facilities, resources, and to plan, organize and direct park personnel in day-to-day operations, protection and improvement of an assigned unit within the County Regional Park System.

In order to qualify for the Park Ranger Supervisor position, applicants must possess a current California Penal Code Section 832 Powers of Arrest Certificate at the time of application. This certification requires the completion of a 40-hour course of instruction, which can be obtained through various locations in California. to find a location closest to you.

A letter from a certified swim instructor issued within the last 12 months, verifying the ability to swim one hundred (100) yards within five (5) minutes, is also required and must be attached to the application as well.

Typical Tasks

  • Implements and evaluates park programs and policies within an assigned park unit :
  • Recommends and develops strategies to achieve unit objectives; research, prepare, plan, implement and monitor parks specific budgets;
  • Defines personnel resource needs and allocates them as required to reach unit objectives;
  • Supervises, assigns, monitors and may assist in the work of subordinate classes of Park Ranger and other personnel assigned to the park unit, such as : patrol of a park or recreational area; greeting and directing of park visitors; and interpreting the natural and historical features of park area;
  • Coordinates and / or conducts formal and informal training of Park Rangers in such areas as : educational and interpretive programs; first aid techniques; departmental practices, policies and procedures;
  • Provides assistance in emergency situations at their unit(s) or other park locations;
  • Issues warnings and citations under appropriate laws or ordinances and may make court appearances;
  • Maintains records and prepares comprehensive reports;
  • Provides input for program planning, development, and implementation of volunteer programs, interpretive programs and natural resource programs;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college is desirable.

Two (2) years experience as a Senior Park Ranger.

Possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment, and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver's permit upon appointment.

Certificates :

  • Possession of the American Red Cross Emergency Response First Aid certification (First Responder Level or higher) and American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification before completion of the probationary period.
  • Possession of current California Penal Code Section 832 Powers of Arrest certificate.
  • Special Requirements :

    Eligibility for appointment as a peace officer in Sections 1029, 1030 and 1031 of the California Government Code. This requires that candidates :

  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or equivalent offense as outlined in California Government Code Section 1029;
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship;
  • Must be at least 18 years of age as outlined in California Government Code Section 1030;
  • Must be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the exercise of peace officer powers as determined by a licensed examining authority in accordance with California Government Code Section 1031;
  • Must pass background investigation conducted in compliance with California Government Code Section 1031;
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, or other irregular hours and to conform to departmental uniform standards;
  • The ability to swim one hundred (100) yards within five (5) minutes (verification from a certified swim instructor issued within the last twelve (12) months);
  • Must successfully demonstrate and maintain physical fitness in order to perform the full scope and functions of the job.
  • Knowledge of :

  • Methods of administrative problem solving;
  • Principles of organization and administration of fiscal, personnel and related aspects or park program management;
  • Principles of employee supervision, counseling, discipline and training;
  • Principles and practices of natural resources conservation, park management, general law enforcement, interpretation and volunteer programs;
  • Principles and practices of first aid, public safety, boating safety, and EMS;
  • Methods and equipment used in search and rescue and wildland fire suppression;
  • Laws of the Federal, State, and County ordinances pertaining to County Parks and Recreation department;
  • Public relations practices.
  • Ability to :

  • Plan, organize, control and evaluate the operation and programs of a park operations;
  • Develop and recommend park unit goals and objectives within the context of departmental policies and priorities;
  • Develop and implement short and long range budget plans that accurately reflect park unit needs;
  • Plan, assign, and supervise the work of others;
  • Read, interpret and enforce laws and regulations in accordance with County policy;
  • Maintain records and prepare clear, complete and concise reports;
  • Evaluate situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action;
  • Speak and write effectively and clearly;
  • Deal effectively with the public;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationship with the public and other agencies.
