Job Description

About Us

Are you ready to be part of a team that is bringing revolutionary technology to the remediation industries?

DISA Technologies is revolutionizing mineral recovery with our patented High-Pressure Slurry Ablation (HPSA) technology—an innovative solution that upgrades critical minerals from mined ore and legacy waste. Serving both the mining and remediation sectors, we recover valuable resources that power industry, strengthen energy independence, and restore contaminated sites to productive use. Our technology unlocks economic and environmental value, transforming how the world processes, remediates, and recycles essential mineral assets.

Job Summary

The Patent Engineer at DISA is known as the Intellectual Property (IP) Engineer. They are responsible for expanding, strengthening, and protecting DISA’s intellectual property portfolio across HPSA technology and all related process, mechanical, and system improvements. This role blends engineering, invention capture, and structured technical writing with hands-on R&D support. The IP Engineer works closely with engineering, R&D, and leadership to identify patentable innovations, draft technical disclosures, support outside patent counsel, and assist in running HPSA tests that feed into new IP filings and product improvements. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic start-up environment, wearing multiple hats and contributing to many areas of business development.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering, R&D, product development, or process design.
  • Experience with experimental setups, data analysis, and process optimization.
  • Preferred experience with patent disclosures, claims, and IP strategy, as well as exposure to mineral processing, slurry systems, high-pressure systems, or related industrial processes.

Supervisor

Vice President of Engineering, unless otherwise designated.

Typical Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify patentable concepts from engineering, R&D, field operations, and process improvements.
  • Translate engineering ideas into clear invention disclosures and draft claim frameworks.
  • Coordinate with outside patent counsel and manage document flow, technical explanations, and drawing packages.
  • Maintain an internal IP roadmap, timeline, and ranking of highest-value areas for protection.
  • Assist in freedom-to-operate reviews and competitive patent landscape analyses.
  • Track competitors’ patents and evaluate overlap, risks, and strategic opportunities.
  • Support HPSA testing, experiments, sample runs, and data collection.
  • Design and run controlled experiments tied to new IP filings in coordination with engineering and R&D.
  • Analyze test data and identify opportunities for system improvement or new patentable features.
  • Assist in design reviews, prototyping, and engineering documentation.
  • Prepare clear technical narratives, drawings, diagrams, and engineering descriptions.
  • Document experimental setups, results, and engineering changes for future IP filings.
  • Support preparation of white papers, regulatory submissions, internal reports, and product specifications.
  • Maintain detailed technical records and lab notebooks aligned with IP best practices.
  • Partner with R&D, engineering, field teams, and operations to surface innovation consistently.
  • Attend design reviews, field debriefs, and test campaigns to identify new IP opportunities.
  • Provide structured summaries to leadership on IP activity, competition, and gaps.
  • Abide by all policies and procedures established by DISA.
  • Attend and participate in all required safety trainings.
  • Assist with any task required by the direct supervisor.
