Definition
Definition : Under general administrative program supervision from the Clinical Director of Dentistry, Pediatric Dentist is accountable for preventative, rehabilitative and community services for community members. Responsibilities include ensuring the quality of care for pediatric patients and implementation of dental care plans. This is treated as an FLSA-Exempt.
Essential Functions : Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.
Examples of Tasks
1. Examines, diagnoses and treats dental problems among infants, children, teenagers, and special needs patients, including preventive care, restorative treatments, and limited orthodontic care.
2. Provides appropriate dental disease prevention measures among infants, children, and teenagers.
3. Diagnoses pathological or irregular conditions in younger patients.
4. Provides advanced dental care and performs dental surgeries at an ambulatory surgical center or hospital setting within the scope of pediatric specialty practice.
5. Develops individualized treatment plans based on each patient's needs.
6. Educates patients and parents or legal guardians of these patients on proper techniques for maintaining good oral hygiene and nutrition.
7. Administers anesthesia for dental procedures when necessary.
8. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals for comprehensive pediatric dental care.
9. Manages dental anxiety and builds trust with young patients.
10. Monitors the growth and development of teeth and jaws.
11. Utilizes specialized equipment designed for children's dental care.
12. Prescribes appropriate medications as needed for patients' dental treatments.
13. Participates in development of public relations and effective communication on pediatric dental disease prevention within and outside the facility.
14. Prepares, maintains, and updates electronic medical records in accordance with clinic guidelines and organizational needs.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics :
- Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of and expertise in modern methods and principles of pediatric dentistry and dental surgery, including preventative aspects, to diagnose and treat dental issues.
- Knowledge of current methods and principles of oral hygiene and prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the mouth.
- Knowledge of local anesthesia (pharmacology and techniques) used in providing dental treatment.
- Knowledge of relevant established federal laws / regulations and standards regarding healthcare.
- Skill in application of modern methods and principles of pediatric dentistry and oral hygiene to evaluate, advise and manage the delivery of care.
- Skill in application of methods, techniques and use of dental equipment in the delivery of patient care.
- Ability to provide consultation and technical assistance to staff, quality healthcare to community members and ensure compliance and consistency with established laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, etc.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative and use good judgment.
- Ability to utilize proven organizational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks.
- Ability to diagnose and treat dental disease.
- Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with health care professionals and others to provide information and / or direction. Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Ability to prepare and maintain required documentation for patient files.
- Ability to apply methods and techniques of preventive dental care and in the treatment and control of dental disease.
- Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA / Confidentiality policies and procedures and ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive patient information and staff member information.

Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience : Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA approved school.
Equivalency : Any equivalent combination of education and / or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
Underfill Eligibility : An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
Special Requirements : Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of this position, successful completion of an extensive background investigation is required.
