Trees Atlanta is a nonprofit community group that protects and improves Atlanta’s urban forest by planting, conserving, and educating. Since its beginnings, Trees Atlanta’s goals have been to plant new trees, conserve existing trees, replace trees lost to development and hazards, and educate the public on the many benefits of trees. Trees Atlanta has become one of the most widely-known and respected non-profits locally, as well as nationally, for their work as stewards of our urban environment. To date, Trees Atlanta has planted and cared for over 170,000 trees in metro Atlanta.
J ob Description
Trees Atlanta is looking for an enthusiastic and committed individual who is excited to join a hard-working, mission-driven team of environmental educators as the lead mentor and organizer for our Junior Intern Program (middle / high school camp volunteers) at our Environmental Education Summer Camp. This individual will play a key role in organizing and mentoring our rising 7th-12th grade camp volunteers as well as assisting the Camp Lead with camp logistics, materials / activity preparation, and various daily camp tasks. This position is ideal for autonomous and organized college students / recent graduates (or equivalent) who have had previous professional experience in youth / teen leadership in a camp or educational setting. The Youth Mentor Fellow wiIll :
Assist Camp Lead in Junior Intern assignment / training process, and facilitate all Junior Intern-related communication / correspondence / logistics throughout Summer Camp.
Create and conduct short (30min), daily learning sessions for Junior Intern volunteers, covering topics such as : Working with Youth, Problem Solving, Mentoring Youth, Safety, and Team-Work
Conduct weekly Junior Intern feedback sessions while providing mentorship and support
Provide support and mentorship to 3 adult Camp Assistants :
Conduct daily / weekly check-ins with 3 adult Camp Assistants throughout each session of summer camp and provide support and feedback as needed.
Periodically conduct camp group observations, with a focus on Camp Assistants and Junior Interns, to provide constructive feedback to groups regarding Junior Intern management.
Provide support and guidance to Camp Assistants with regards to Junior Intern related behavior management and conflict resolution.
Work closely with the Camp Lead and assist with various camp tasks and responsibilities :
Prepare and organize daily camp materials for Camp Groups
Work with Camp Lead to tackle various camp-related tasks (communication, supplies ordering / gathering, tackling creative camp projects like camp / staff awards, etc.)
Be on-call as a backup camp substitute if needed (this may require a full day of biking)
Requirements :
Have a High School diploma or equivalent
Prior camp counselor / leadership experience required
Ability to engage with and effectively manage groups of middle / high school student volunteers
Ability to engage children in 1st -6th grade with environmental education. Professional experience is preferred.
Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Suites.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Dependable and highly skilled with time and task management
Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively on a team
Knowledge of environmental science, ecology, botany, outdoor education, or related fields preferred.
Be self-motivated and enthusiastic.
Physical Requirements
Must be capable of being very active outdoors in various weather conditions with exposure to summer sun, heat, inclement weather, and natural wildlife habitats, including animals and / or insects for extended periods of time.
Must be a confident and safe bike rider able to ride several miles each day of camp, as needed
Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. repetitively.
