Pharmacy Coordinator – Controlled Substances & Sterile Products
Job Type : Full-Time
Schedule : Monday–Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. – 4 : 00 p.m.
Salary Range : $110,000 – $167,000
Position Summary
The Pharmacy Coordinator for Controlled Substances and Sterile Products is responsible for ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient management of sterile product preparation and controlled substance handling across the hospital pharmacy. Reporting to the Director or Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services, this role provides clinical, operational, and regulatory oversight, including workflow optimization, quality assurance, equipment maintenance, and staff education. The Coordinator serves as a leader and resource within the pharmacy, supporting excellence in patient care, regulatory compliance, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations governing the receipt, storage, preparation, dispensing, and documentation of controlled substances and sterile products.
- Oversee daily operations of the IV compounding area and controlled substance vault / safe, ensuring adherence to aseptic technique, environmental standards, and quality assurance protocols.
- Develop, implement, and monitor policies and procedures related to sterile compounding and controlled substance management.
- Supervise and train staff in sterile compounding practices, hazardous drug handling, and controlled substance accountability.
- Collaborate with nursing, medical, and administrative teams to ensure high-quality pharmaceutical care and patient safety.
- Serve as the primary resource for sterile products, including maintaining equipment, environmental controls, and sterility assurance programs.
- Participate in the hospital’s Opioid Stewardship Program and Drug Diversion Prevention Program , including developing metrics for safe and effective analgesic use.
- Support performance improvement initiatives, accreditation readiness, and regulatory inspections.
- Provide daily pharmacist coverage and oversee the Cancer Center Pharmacy in the absence of the department manager.
- Participate in relevant committees, task forces, and departmental projects to support organizational goals.
- Promote a culture of professionalism, continuous learning, and collaboration within the pharmacy department.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
