Position Summary
The Education Program Manager leads the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum’s educational vision and delivery, ensuring that all programs advance the Museum’s mission to preserve, interpret, and share the history, science, and service of the U.S. Submarine Force in the Pacific. This role designs and oversees engaging learning experiences for K–12 students, educators, families, adult learners, and community partners.
The manager builds strong relationships with schools, cultural and STEM organizations, and sponsors; manages education staff and volunteers; and drives growth in reach, quality, and earned/restricted program revenue. The ideal candidate combines museum education expertise, strong operational leadership, and a passion for naval heritage and STEM learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Educational Strategy & Program Leadership
  • Execute an education strategy aligned with Museum mission, audience needs, and capacity.
  • Design, pilot, evaluate, and refine high-quality educational programs including school tours, hands-on STEM labs, public programs, and digital offerings.
  • Ensure programs reflect best practices in informal learning, inquiry-based STEM education, and culturally responsive teaching.
School & Community Partnerships
  • Grow and maintain partnerships with local and regional schools, districts, homeschool networks, universities, scouting groups, and youth organizations.
  • Identify and pursue collaborative programming opportunities with STEM, maritime, and cultural institutions.
  • Represent the Museum at education and museum conferences, community events, and professional networks.
Team, Volunteer, and Docent Management
  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate education staff (full-time, part-time, seasonal, interns).
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and support docent/volunteer educators to deliver consistent visitor experiences.
  • Develop training materials and ongoing professional development for education and frontline interpretation teams.
Operations, Safety, and Visitor Experience
  • Oversee day-to-day execution of education programs on museum grounds and aboard/around submarine exhibits as applicable.
  • Coordinate logistics: bookings, staffing, supplies, accessibility needs, transportation, risk management, and emergency procedures.
  • Ensure programs comply with all safety requirements for shipboard/submarine environments, youth participation, and public gatherings.
Communications & Marketing Collaboration
  • Work with Marketing/Communications to promote educational offerings, create program collateral, and maintain web content.
  • Provide clear program descriptions, schedules, pricing, and teacher resources.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Studies, History, STEM field, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in education, including program design and facilitation.
  • At least 2 years of people management experience (staff and/or volunteers).
  • Demonstrated success building K–12 and community partnerships.
  • Excellent project management, budgeting, and organizational skills.
  • Confident public speaker and facilitator for audiences of varying ages and backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing STEM programs linked to engineering, navigation, acoustics, oceanography, or robotics.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy/Submarine Force history, maritime heritage, or military museums.
  • Experience with digital/hybrid learning, virtual field trips, or learning management platforms.
  • Bilingual proficiency relevant to local audiences.

Core Competencies
  • Mission-driven leadership: translates purpose into measurable education impact.
  • Instructional design excellence: crafts programs that are rigorous, fun, and age-appropriate.
  • Operational reliability: makes programs run smoothly and safely every time.
  • Relationship builder: trusted partner to schools, military, donors, and community.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Work occurs in a museum and submarine/shipboard setting. Requires walking/standing for extended periods; ascending/descending ladders or steep stairs; navigating narrow passageways; lifting and carrying materials up to ~25 lbs; and working in varying temperatures/humidity.
