Department Summary The UCLA Police Department is a leader in providing 21st Century law enforcement services to our campus and surrounding community. The UCLAPD team is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment to those who teach, learn, work, play, or visit UCLA. We do this through patrol, rapid response to calls for service, investigations, education and implementation of preventative strategies. Our work, grounded in a community policing philosophy, utilizes campus partnerships as the most effective approach to creating and maintaining a safe campus. Position Summary UCLA is conducting a national search for its next Chief of Police, offering a unique opportunity to lead public safety and policing at the nation’s #1 public university. Serving a dynamic and diverse campus community of 90,000 students, faculty, and staff, the Chief will provide strategic leadership in patrol operations, emergency response, investigations, and safety education initiatives. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus and Community Safety, the Chief will play a critical role in maintaining a safe and inclusive environment while preparing UCLA to host the world’s athletes during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications At least 15 years of increasing law enforcement responsibility (Required) At least 5 years of management and administrative responsibility (Required) Achieved the rank of Captain or above (Required) Must be a sworn peace officer either with California POST certifications (management and advanced) or with equivalent certifications and the ability to obtain California POST certifications within one year of hire, and with significant experience and demonstrated achievements in managing a law enforcement workforce. (Required) Current working knowledge of police management methods and philosophies, law enforcement practices / procedures and legal issues, especially relating to the campus environment. (Required) Demonstrated ability to lead law enforcement professionals with regards to the principles of community oriented policing, encouraging community involvement and an enhanced working relationship between law enforcement and the community as a whole. (Required) Demonstrated skill in analysis and strategic planning to identify key issues in complex situations, evaluate options and initiate strategies for optimal resolutions. (Required) Demonstrated ability and skill in acquiring information, including the solicitation of input from others, useful to improving day-to-day operations, strategic planning and crisis management. (Required) Detailed knowledge of California statutory codes, case law, civil law and procedures, civil liability issues, labor law, and personnel administration relevant to a Police Department. (Required) Demonstrated skill in relating well to a varied University community in a variety of situations both formal and informal, while maintaining a professional demeanor sufficient to represent the interests of the UCLA Police Department. (Preferred) Working knowledge of policing at an institution of higher education with shared governance between campus constituents. (Preferred) Demonstrated ability to provide leadership with effective written and oral communication skills sufficient to explain, persuade and direct. (Required) Demonstrated and extensive experience with the Incident Command System (ICS), including at the roles of Incident Commander or Operations Chief. This experience should have been gained during the planning, deployment, and response to major events such as sporting contests, public demonstrations, national disasters, or occurrences of a similar scale. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Bachelor's Degree (Required) Master's Degree or above (Preferred) Other Type of Degree Attendance at an advanced law enforcement executive leadership program, such as the FBI National Academy or the Senior Management Institute for Police (Preferred) Ability to drive legally in the state of California Immediate (Required) Possession of POST supervisory and management certificates, or the ability to attain them within one year of employment One year (Required) Special Conditions for Employment Background Check : Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation. Live Scan Background Check : A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment. Age Requirement : Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
