ACM POLICY OFFICE MISSION : To coordinate and support ACM's engagement with public technology policy issues involving information technology globally. To educate and inform computing professionals, policymakers, and the public about technology policy and its consequences. To shape public technology policy through a deeper understanding of the technology issues involved.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES : Coordinate and support the ACM Global Technology Policy Council and all ACM regional policy committees (currently in the US and Europe) in the development of policy positions; lead the development and evolution of an ACM policy agenda; engage with government policymakers (primarily in the US, with coordination of such activities in other global regions); inform policymakers of ACM policy positions and bring ACM technical expertise to the discussion of important policy issues; inform ACM members of important policy issues and ACM policy positions; manage the ACM Policy Office; coordinate all aspects of ACM policy work with ACM New York Headquarters and senior ACM volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS : The successful candidate will possess superior knowledge of the current state of computing research and technology, of issues relating to public use of and concerns about information technologies, both in the US and globally, and about the current and future roles of technology in industry, government, and private life. Advanced degrees in computer science (or a related field) and in public policy, law or related fields are preferred. Applicants should have at least 5 years of experience in public policy, familiarity with science agencies, legislative and regulatory processes in the US and, ideally, in Europe, the ability to direct an office and to work well with others, and excellent writing and communication skills.
