Ford's Research and Advanced Engineering team takes new ideas from theory to reality. Every day, we develop advanced energy management and propulsion technologies, create cutting-edge materials and manufacturing processes, and curate world-class cabin experiences that redefine what it means to drive a Ford.

You will be leading the analysis, simulation and measurement of high frequency signals generated in LV & HV power electronic systems. Responsible for developing and implementing cost effective solutions such as passive filters, chokes, resistive snubbers, to attenuate high frequency interaction in inverter, motor and HV cabling. Optimize capacitor layout and busbar design.

This is a hybrid position, but you must be onsite 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

What you'll do...

  • Build circuit models to estimate frequency generation and propagation in LV and HV circuits
  • Design next generation power electronic converters for electrified vehicles.
  • Identify topology, design, and build CM and DM inductive chokes, decoupling capacitors, magnetic cores.
  • Develop advanced filtering solutions and integrate it with power module, busbar, PCB.
  • Identify topology, design, and build CM and DM inductive chokes, decoupling capacitors, and magnetic cores.
  • Meet cost, volume, efficiency, and attenuation targets for filter designs.
  • Effectively communicate results by writing technical reports, invention disclosures and present data to management.
  • HV bus bar design, layout and integration with DC links capacitor, passive filters, power modules
  • Support technical interaction with experts from inverter control, low voltage circuit designers, power electronics and electric machines

Qualifications

You'll have...

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field
  • 3+ years of research / industry experience in fields of architectural design, simulation, and manufacturing of high-power filters for power electronic systems.
  • 3+ years in at least 3 of the following areas (coursework, internships, Research and Co-ops included)
  • Experience in electric circuit simulation of power electronic converters to estimate the magnitude and phase of noise generation.
  • Expertise in circuit parameter extraction and transfer function, from CAD models and measurement of electric systems.
  • Support in HV system design, bus-bar & capacitor layout ,and testing of HV traction inverter
  • Learn and operate power electronic automation system to characterize static and dynamic losses of HV semiconductor devices
  • Develop HV circuit model of inverter to accurately estimate losses as function of operating voltage, current and temperature
  • Develop model of semiconductor device (using Synopsys SABER) to accurately replicate device slew rate, tail current, turn on / off delay, voltage spike, reverse recovery
  • Integrate semiconductor and inverter system model. Generate loss maps for complete operating region as function of static and dynamic losses
  • Generate loss maps for complete operating region as function of static and dynamic losses
  • Develop inverter model to predict system stability
  • Practical experience in designing filters, chokes, and snubbers to attenuate noise generation and propagation in electric drive systems.
  • Expertise in filter topology, the impact of filter parasitic inductance, and capacitance on filter frequency response.
  • Experience in component selection, durability, and cost impact of various filter and snubber topology.
  • Knowledge in semiconductor devices and correlation between semiconductor switching process and high frequency noise generation.
  • Expertise in double pulse test procedure, to quantify semiconductor switching related noise generation, ability to quantify common and differential mode noise during switching and mapping the propagation path of the corresponding noise.
  • Expertise in high-speed time domain signal acquisition and analysis using oscilloscopes, passive probes, and optical differential probes for high-voltage power electronic and low-voltage systems.
  • Expertise in frequency domain signal acquisition and analysis using network and spectrum analyzers, high-frequency EMC probes, and signal filtering techniques.
  • Knowledge in PCB design and layout for prototyping filter design for high-power applications.
