Receiving operational direction from the Lead Physician and reporting to the Health Services Director, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner works independently to provide medical care for common and uncommon psychiatric illness and medical illness with a psychiatric component. Medical care can include a physical examination, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of psychiatric illness, ordering tests and interpreting the results, counseling patients on preventive care and preventive and health maintenance services. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner may, when appropriate, refer students to other practitioners within the SJSU Wellness Center or refer to community resources for more extensive follow-up and treatment. All staff are expected to conform to CSU, State, and Federal regulations and laws and operate within the scope of the program established by the Board of Trustees. Working collegially and collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all Student Wellness Center positions.
