Position Summary :
The Psychiatrist as a member of the Behavioral Health care team provides direct care to referred adult patients and may be required to demonstrate age specific competency, depending upon clinical assignment, in a variety of clinical settings throughout the health center. The Psychiatrist is responsible for providing quality patient care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. The Psychiatrist reports to the Medical Director of Behavioral Health or designee.
The Psychiatrist conducts psychiatric / psychopharmacological evaluations for referred adults and determines which patients are best served in a primary care, specialty behavioral health or community behavioral health setting. The Psychiatrist provides expert consultation to the medical and behavioral health staff in the management of psychiatric disorders in primary care. In certain situations and when appropriate, the Psychiatrist may follow the patient longitudinally. Education of the medical providers, behavioral health providers, PMHNP residents and students as well as supervision of PMHNP residents and students and other Psychiatrists are components of the position. The position may involve both telehealth and in-person work.
The Psychiatrist has clinical responsibilities in the Behavioral Health Urgent Care Service (BHUCS) and affiliated locations at EBNHC including the Satellite Emergency Facility (SEF). In the BHUCS, the Psychiatrist is responsible for providing quality patient care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. The Psychiatrist will provide emergency psychopharmacologic evaluations and prescriptions to patients presenting to the BHUCS in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
This position is part of a team that staffs the BHUCS 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and as such will include shifts that cover that time frame. The position affords the opportunity for administrative growth for the interested candidate. EBNHC is regarded as an underserved area for the NHSC scholarship program.
Establishes rapport and develops therapeutic relationships with patients of diverse backgrounds and varying levels of motivation for change.
Demonstrates knowledge of the full range of community resources to properly guide and direct patients.
Renders accurate diagnoses utilizing the DSM 5.
Documents and presents completed assessments for clinical disposition in a clear and organized manner.
Provides consultation to and coordinates patient care with multidisciplinary staff in clinic and in the BHUCS..
Holds a DEA X number, refers appropriate patients to the EBNHC Recovery Services program, and prescribes medications to assist with substance use recovery.
Provides urgent coverage and crisis intervention for referred patients.
Screens for domestic violence, substance use and risk behaviors with every patient, applying protocols for intervention with positive screenings.
Performs and documents outreach activities for patients who do not follow through, especially for those with known risk factors.
Serves as an expert consultant and / or supervisor to PACE providers (Program of All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly) for their psychiatrically complex patients, consistent with experience, if needed.
Demonstrates capacity to diagnose and effectively treat a range of behavioral health conditions, including anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders and moderate-severe personality disorders with evidence-based psychopharmacology.
Demonstrates excellent, advanced triage skills, assigning the appropriate level of priority at all times.
Provides education and supervision to the medical and behavioral health providers regarding psychopharmacological treatment and patient management.
Performs advanced, high quality, thorough psychosocial evaluation that contains data in support of the diagnosis, findings, recommendations and plans.
Meets the departmental documentation standards in a timely fashion.
Serves as an expert consultant and provides ongoing psychopharmacologic care to SCO (Senior Care Options) providers for their psychiatrically complex patients, consistent with experience.
Demonstrates excellent clinical judgement in assessing changes in risk, enlisting the Administrative and / or Medical Directors and initiating Special Clinical Reviews as indicated.
Attains working knowledge of all departmental policies and procedures and interprets them to new staff and assigned supervisees.
Applies short-term, solution-based and evidence-based pharmacotherapies to patients in the BHUCS.
Manages a full caseload consisting of patients seen for psychopharmacological consultation to medical providers, assessment, and medication management.
Maintains professional licensure, accumulating the required number and type of CMEs and submits the associated documentation to the Medical Director.
May accept responsibility for and effectively manage a departmental project, procedure or new function.
Presents clinical cases for review at daily and weekly clinical meetings according to departmental standard.
Consistently achieves direct care target of 65%, regularly analyzing with Medical Director direct care data, no show rate, and access and makes adjustments accordingly.
Masters each computer-based application required for effective performance of the functions associated with the job description.
Provides consultation, training and supervision to departmental staff, medical providers, BH interns and PMHNP residents and students as needed.
Successfully manages all aspects of the particular assigned program or departmental function.
Performs all the required steps to ensure the generation of clean claims – completing documentation, submitting encounters on time, and completing re-authorizations.
Conducts a focused physical exam for patients in the BHUCS when necessary.
Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory tests, radiologic tests and EKGs with the support of the SEM.
Interfaces with families of patients seen in the BHUCS to provide information and obtain collateral information.
May accept responsibility for managing the BHUCS milieu as needed.
