Job description

Description of Work

The Department of Educational Psychology seeks applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in our APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program beginning August 2025. We are seeking individuals with a doctorate in counseling psychology or a related field to be completed no later than August 2025. We are seeking a colleague whose work promotes the liberation of all people and centers the voices and mental health needs of those often omitted from psychology scholarship. Candidates whose clinical and research interests focus on diverse communities are encouraged to apply.

Candidates are also expected to contribute to the continuance of the program’s longstanding commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. Candidates must show interest and promise in publishing research and teaching courses germane to Counseling Psychology (e.g., psychotherapy research, diversity, and / or liberation psychology). Candidates are expected to develop a programmatic line of research for which they can seek internal and external funding. Teaching responsibilities may include graduate courses in core counseling psychology areas, including psychological assessment, applied psychological research, and counseling theories in applied psychology areas such as couple and family counseling, practicum, and field placement courses. Additional responsibilities may include the development and maintenance of an ongoing program of research, student mentoring and research advisement, preparation of research and / or training grants, and participation in faculty governance. The successful candidate may also be responsible for clinical supervision, supervision of graduate teaching assistants, and aiding in accreditation efforts for the MA program. Collaboration with the other Counseling Psychology Program faculty in contributing to the management of the program is essential. Willingness to collaborate across disciplines in the College of Education and Human Sciences and the University is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching, mentoring, supervising, and advising a diverse student body, including students of color, first-generation students, students from rural and urban areas, international students, and non-traditional students. The Counseling Psychology Program resides in the Department of Educational Psychology within the College of Education and Human Sciences. The Department of Educational Psychology is a vibrant department that expects innovation and excellence in on-campus instruction and supervision, experiential teaching and learning, mentoring, career preparation, and student support to successfully meet the changing needs of a diverse and inclusive workforce.

The Department offers five graduate programs : Counseling Psychology (APA-accredited); Developmental and Learning Sciences; Institutional Research; Quantitative, Qualitative, and Psychometric Methods; and School Psychology (APA-accredited and NASP-approved). The Department of Educational Psychology also houses the Buros Center for Testing, the Counseling and School Psychology Clinic, the Nebraska Evaluation and Research (NEAR) Center, and the Nebraska Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology (APA-accredited). The Counseling Psychology Program employs a scientist-practitioner training model and has enjoyed full APA accreditation for its doctoral program since 1959. The program also offers training at the Master’s degree level in community or school counseling. The Department of Educational Psychology’s affiliation with the Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools (); the Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior (); and the Buffet Early Childhood Institute () provide exciting opportunities for collaboration across centers, departments, colleges, and campuses.

UNL is a Carnegie-ranked R1 institution and is one of four campuses of the University of Nebraska, the state’s largest and only land-grant institution.
